And all the people, even the tax-collectors, when they heard him, vindicated the righteous requirements of God by submitting to John's baptism, but the Pharisees and experts in the law thwarted God's purpose for themselves by refusing to be baptized by him.

so they asked him, "Why are you baptizing then, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I am baptizing only in water. There is standing among you One with whom you are not acquainted.

This took place at Bethany on the farther side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.


I did not know Him myself, but the very One who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'The One on whom you see the Spirit coming down and remaining, is the One who is to baptize in the Holy Spirit.'

But John too was baptizing people at Aenon, near Salim, for there was plenty of water there, and so the people were coming and being baptized.

He again crossed the Jordan at the place where John at first used to baptize, and there He stayed.


You know the story yourselves that spread all over Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached,

and I remembered the saying of the Lord, 'John baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.'

He then asked, "With what sort of baptism then were you baptized?" They answered, "With John's baptism." Then Paul said, "John baptized with a baptism that was an expression of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was to come after him; that is, in Jesus."

Every ravine must be filled up, and every mountain and hill leveled down; the crooked places must become straight roads, and the rough roads must be made smooth, And all mankind must see the salvation of God.'"

He answered, "Elijah does come and will get everything ready.

As it is written in the prophet Isaiah: "Here I send my messenger ahead of you; He will prepare your way. He is a voice of one who shouts in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord; make the paths straight for Him.'" And people from all over Judea and everybody in Jerusalem kept on going out to him and being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. Now John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he used to live on dried locusts and wild honey. He kept preaching the following message, "After me there is coming One who is stronger than I am, whose shoes I am not fit to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you in water, but He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit."

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must drink no wine nor strong drink, and so he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his birth. And he will turn many of Israel's descendants to the Lord their God. He will go before Him in the spirit and the power of Elijah to turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the upright, to make ready for the Lord a people perfectly prepared."

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to make ready His ways, to give His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins. Because the heart of our God is merciful. And so the day will dawn upon us from on high, read more.

He came for the purpose of testifying, to testify to the light, so that everyone through him might come to believe. He was not the light; he came to testify to the light.

John testified to Him and cried out, for this was the one who said, "The One who is coming after me has been put before me, because He existed before me."

Then they said to him, "Who are you? Tell us, so that we can have an answer to give to those who sent us. What have you to say for yourself?" so they asked him, "Why are you baptizing then, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I am baptizing only in water. There is standing among you One with whom you are not acquainted. He is to become my successor, because He has been put before me, and I am not fit to untie His shoestrings." There is someone else who testifies to me, and I know that the testimony which He gives to me is of force. You yourselves sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. However, I do not accept mere human testimony, but I am saying this that you may be saved. read more.
John was the lamp that kept on burning and shining, and you decided for a time to delight yourselves in his light.

And just as Moses in the desert lifted the serpent on the pole, the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who trusts in Him may have eternal life. "For God loved the world so much that He gave His Only Son, so that anyone who trusts in Him may never perish but have eternal life. read more.
For God sent His Son into the world, not to pass sentence on it, but that the world through Him might be saved. Whoever trusts in Him is never to come up for judgment, but whoever does not trust in Him has already received his sentence, because he has not trusted in the name of God's only Son.





The result will be, that any person who will not listen to that prophet will be utterly destroyed from among the people.'



Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life myself. Whoever continues to believe in me will live right on even though he dies, and no person who continues to live and believe in me will ever die at all. Do you believe this?"

Now great crowds were going along with Him, and all at once He turned and said to them: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and still more, his own life too, he cannot be a disciple of mine. Whoever does not persevere in carrying his own cross and thus following after me, cannot be a disciple of mine. read more.
"What man among you, if he wishes to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see whether he has money enough to complete it? Lest, perchance, after he has laid the foundation but cannot complete the building, all who see it begin to make sport of him, and say, 'This fellow started to erect a building but could not complete it!' "Or what king, when he is going to make an attack on another king, does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand soldiers to meet the other king who is coming against him with twenty thousand? And if he cannot, while the other is still far away, he sends envoys and asks for terms of peace. "Just so, no one of you who does not forsake everything that he has, can be a disciple of mine.


Then they asked Him, "What must we do to perform the works that God demands?" Jesus answered them, "The work that God demands of you is this, to believe in the messenger whom He has sent."

While you have the light believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." On saying this Jesus went away and hid Himself.

And a man came up to Him and asked, "What is there good that I can do to possess eternal life?" And He answered him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only One who is perfectly good. But if you want to get into that life, you must practice keeping the commandments." He asked Him, "What sort of commandments?" Jesus answered, "You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not lie, read more.
You must practice honoring your father and mother. And you must love your neighbor as you do yourself." The young man said, "I have kept all these commandments; what more do I lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell everything you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come back here and follow me."

Jesus heard that they had turned the man out of the synagogue; so He found him and said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man yourself?"


Then a certain member of the council asked Him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to get possession of eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me perfectly good? No one is perfectly good but God Himself. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Practice honoring your father and mother.'" read more.
But he said, "I have kept all these commandments ever since I was a child." When Jesus heard this, He said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell everything you have, and distribute the money among the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come back and follow me." But when he heard that, he was very sad, for he was surpassingly rich. So when Jesus saw it, He said, "How hard it is for those who have money to get into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God." But those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?"

Jesus answered him, "I most solemnly say to you, no one can ever see the kingdom of God, unless he is born from above." Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot again enter his mother's womb and be born, can he?" Jesus answered, "I most solemnly say to you, no one can ever get into the kingdom of God, unless he is born of water and the Spirit. read more.
Whatever is born of the physical is physical, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spiritual. Never wonder at my telling you that you must all be born from above. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. That is just the way it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Then Nicodemus answered by asking, "How can this be?" Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel and do not know this? I most solemnly say to you, we know what we are talking about and we have seen what we are testifying to, yet you are all rejecting our testimony. If you do not believe the earthly things I tell you, how can you believe the heavenly things, if I tell you about them?
