"I know what you are doing, I know your love and faithfulness, your service and patient endurance, and I know that you are now working harder than you did at first.
"To the messenger of the church at Sardis write: 'The One who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars speaks as follows: "I know what you are doing; you have the reputation of being alive, but in reality you are dead.
"I know what you are doing. See! I have put before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have but little strength, and yet you have obeyed my message and you have not disowned my name.
"I know what you are doing, and that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.
Then you must practice dealing with others as you would like for them to deal with you, for this is the summing up of the law and the prophets.
Then even the tax-collectors came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what ought we to do?"
Then some soldiers too were asking him, "What ought we too to do?" So he said to them, "Never extort money from anyone, never make a false accusation, and always be satisfied with your wages."
Now when a workman gets his pay, it is not considered from the point of view of a favor but of an obligation;
Indeed, I do not do the good things that I want to do, but I do practice the evil things that I do not want to do.
the character of each one's work will come to light, for the judgment day will show it up. This is so, because that day will show itself in fire, and the fire will test the character of each one's work.
Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the product of my work for the Lord?
Such people should consider this: When I arrive for action I shall do exactly what I said I would in my letters when far away.
For the cravings of the lower nature are just the opposite to those of the Spirit, and the cravings of the Spirit are just the opposite of those of the lower nature; these two are opposed to each other, so that you cannot do anything you please.
And whatever you say or do, let it all be done with reference to the Lord Jesus, and through Him continue to give thanks to God the Father.
Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as work for the Lord and not for men,
but with good deeds; for this is appropriate for women who profess to be pious.
Let us continue so to consider one another as to stimulate one another to love and good deeds.
Keep on obeying this message; do not merely listen to it, and so deceive yourselves.
Because if anyone merely listens to the message without obeying it, he is like a man who looks in a mirror at his own face,
But the man who looks at the flawless law that makes men free, and keeps on looking, proving himself to be, not a forgetful hearer but an actual doer of what it requires, will be blessed in what he does.
You must continue talking and acting like people who are to be judged by the law that treats them as free.
Who among you is wise and intelligent? Let him show by his noble living that his good deeds are done in humility, which wisdom prompts.
So remember the heights from which you have fallen, and repent and do as you did at first, or else I will surely come and move your lampstand from its place -- if you do not repent.
