"Reuben, thou art mine eldest son, my might and the beginning of my strength, chief in receiving and chief in power. As unstable as water wast thou: thou shalt therefore not be the chiefest, for thou wentest up upon thy father's bed, and then defiledest thou my couch with going up.

The sons of Reuben, the eldest son of Israel: for he was the eldest. But because he defied his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, and so he is not reckoned unto the birthright.

"Judah, thy brethren shall praise thee, and thine hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies, and thy father's children shall stoop unto thee.


They departed from hence in heaviness, but with joy will I bring them hither again. I will lead them by the rivers of water in a straight way, where they shall not stumble: For I will be Israel's father, and Ephraim shall be my firstborn.

Upon this complaint, I thought thus by myself: Is not Ephraim my dear son? Is he not the child, with whom I have had all mirth and pastime? For since the time that I first communed with him, I have him ever in remembrance: therefore my very heart driveth me unto him; gladly and lovingly will I have mercy upon him, sayeth the LORD.

Isaac loved Esau because he did eat of his venison, but Rebekah loved Jacob.


"Behold, I have taken the Levites, from among the children of Israel, for all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: so that the Levites shall be mine.

And the LORD said unto Moses, "Number all the firstborn that are males among the children of Israel, from a month old and above, and take the number of their names. And thou shalt appoint the Levites to me, the LORD, for all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites for the firstborn of the children of Israel." And all the firstborn males, in the sum of names, from a month old and above, were numbered twenty two thousand two hundred and seventy three.

and I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn among the children of Israel,



And I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.



And when Pharaoh was loath to let us go, the LORD slew all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: as well the firstborn of men as of beasts. And therefore I sacrifice unto the LORD all the males that open the matrix, but all the firstborn of my children I must redeem.'

Because all the firstborn are mine - for the same day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast, and mine they shall be: for I am the LORD."

But he shall know the son of the hated for his firstborn, that he give him double of all that he hath. For he is the first of his strength, and to him belongeth the right of the firstbornship.


"The elder shall serve the younger." As it is written, "Jacob he loved, but Esau he hated."

And the LORD said unto her, "There are two manner of people in thy womb, and two nations shall spring out of thy bowels, and the one nation shall be mightier than the other and the eldest shall be servant unto the younger."


likewise shalt thou do of thine oxen and of thy sheep. Seven days it shall be with the dam, and the eighth day thou shalt give it me.

"When an ox, a sheep or a goat is brought forth, it shall be seven days under the dam. And from the eighth day forth, it shall be accepted unto a gift in the sacrifice of the LORD.


People be thy servants, and nations bow unto thee. Be lord over thy brethren, and thy mother's children stoop unto thee. Cursed be he that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee."

'Let me go I pray thee, for our kindred hold an offering in the city, and my brother hath sent for me. Now therefore if I have found favour in thine eyes let me go and see my brother.' And therefore he cometh not unto the table of the king."


And Jacob said, "Swear to me then this day." And he swore to him and sold his birthright unto Jacob.

And Jacob said, "Sell me this day thy birthright."


And he said, "Thy brother came with subtlety, and hath taken away thy blessing."

and make me meat such as I love, and bring it me and let me eat that my soul may bless thee before that I die."


But the first of the ass thou shalt buy out with a sheep, or if thou redeem him not: see thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou must needs redeem. And see that no man appear before me empty.

All that breaketh the matrix of all flesh that men bring unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be thine. Neverthelater, the firstborn of man shall be redeemed, and the firstborn of unclean beasts shall be redeemed.


And he said, "Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel put their eyes on me, that I should reign. Howbeit, the kingdom was turned away and given to my brother, for it was appointed him of the LORD: and now I ask a petition of thee, whereof deny me not."

And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, "Why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? But rather ask for him the kingdom, seeing he is mine elder brother! Even for him ask it; and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah."


And all the firstborn of the asses, thou shalt redeem with a sheep: if thou redeem him not, then break his neck. But all the firstborn among thy children shalt thou buy out.

Hath the LORD a pleasure in many thousand rams, or innumerable streams of oil? Or shall I give my firstborn for mine offenses, and the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?"


Thy fruits, whether they be dry or moist, see thou keep not back. Thy firstborn son thou shalt give me:

"Sanctify unto me all the firstborn that open all manner matrices among the children of Israel, as well of men as of beasts: for they are mine."


If a man have two wives, one loved and another hated, and they have borne him children, both the loved and also the hated; if the firstborn be the son of the hated: then when he dealeth his goods among his children, he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated which is indeed the firstborn:

And their father gave them many great gifts in silver, gold and other precious things with strong cities in Judah: but the kingdom he gave to Jehoram, because he was the eldest.

Then Samuel said unto Jesse, "Send and fetch him for we will not sit down, till he be come hither." And he sent and brought him in. And he was brown with goodly eyes, and well favoured in sight. And then the LORD said, "Up and anoint him: for this is he."


Then said God, "Nay. Sara thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name Isaac. And I will make my covenant with him, that it shall be an everlasting covenant unto his seed after him. And as concerning Ishmael also, I have heard thy request: lo, I will bless him and increase him, and multiply him exceedingly. Twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make a great nation of him. But my covenant will I make with Isaac, which Sara shall bear unto thee: even this time, twelve month."


And he blessed Joseph saying, "God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, and the God which hath fed me all my life long unto this day; And the angel which hath delivered me from all evil, bless these lads: that they may be called after my name, and after my father Abraham and Isaac, and that they may grow and multiply upon the earth." When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. And he lift up his father's hand, to have removed it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head, read more.
and said unto his father, "Not so my father, for this is the eldest. Put thy righthand upon his head." And his father would not, but said, "I know it well my son, I know it well. He shall be also a people and shall be great. But of a truth his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall be full of people." And he blessed them, saying, "At the example of these, the Israelites shall bless and say, 'God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh.'" Thus set he Ephraim before Manasseh.


Then took Joseph them both: Ephraim in his righthand, toward Israel's lefthand, and Manasseh in his lefthand, toward Israel's righthand, and brought them unto him. And Israel stretched out his righthand and laid it upon Ephraim's head which was the younger, and his lefthand upon Manasseh's head, crossing his hands; for Manasseh was the elder.


"'But the firstborn of the beasts that pertain unto the LORD, may no man sanctify: whether it be ox or sheep, for they are the LORD's already.


And give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is redeemed, unto Aaron and his sons." And Moses took the redemption money of the overplus that were more than the Levites, among the firstborn of the children of Israel: and it came to a thousand three hundred and sixty five sicles, of the holy sicle. read more.
And he gave that redemption money unto Aaron and his sons at the word of the LORD, even as the LORD commanded Moses.


And for the redeeming of the two hundred and seventy three which are more than the Levites in the firstborn of the children of Israel, take five sicles of every piece, after the sicles of the holy place; twenty geras; the sicles.


and the firstlings of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law: and the firstlings of our oxen and of our sheep, that we should bring all this to the house of our God unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:

"But the firstborn of oxen, sheep and goats shall not be redeemed. For they are holy, and thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat to be a sacrifice of a sweet savour unto the LORD.


All that breaketh the matrix of all flesh that men bring unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be thine. Neverthelater, the firstborn of man shall be redeemed, and the firstborn of unclean beasts shall be redeemed.


And the LORD said unto Moses, "Behold, I have made thee Pharaoh's God, and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. Thou shalt speak all that I command thee; and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land.


And when the time of their purification, after the law of Moses, was come they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord: As it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every man child that first openeth the matrix, shall be called holy to the Lord":
