Then addressing himself to his disciples, if any man, said he, would follow me, let him renounce himself, take up his cross, and so follow me. for whosoever will save himself, shall be a looser: and whosoever shall suffer loss for my sake, shall be a gainer. what advantage is it to a man to gain the whole world at the price of his life? or what would not a man pay down to preserve his life?

Then addressing himself to the people, and his disciples, he said, he that desires to be under my conduct, let him renounce himself, and follow me. for he that would save his life, shall lose it; and he that would lose his life out of love to me and the gospel, he shall save it. what advantage is it for a man to gain the whole world with the loss of his life?

Then he said to the whole company, if any one will be my follower, let him renounce himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. for whoever would save his life, shall lose it: and he that would lose his life, out of love to me, shall save it. what advantage is it for a man to have gain'd the whole world, if he himself runs into utter loss and ruin?

Jesus said, if thou wilt be perfect, go sell your estate, give the value to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: then come and follow me.

then Jesus looking upon him with a favourable eye, said, there is one thing still to be done; go, sell all your estate, and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; then come, take up the cross, and follow me.

upon hearing that, Jesus said to him, one thing you have yet to do: sell all you have, and give it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: then come, and follow me.

At another time, as they were walking in the road, a man said to him, I will be your follower, wherever you go. Jesus answered him, foxes have their kennels, and birds of the air their nests, but the son of man hath not where to lay his head. Jesus said to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved at his asking him the third time, "do you love me?" and he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep. I tell you for certain, tho' when you was a youth you girded your self, and rambled where you had a mind: yet when you are old, your hands shall be stretch'd out, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee where you will be unwilling to go. this he said to signify to Peter by what death he should glorify God. and when he had spoken this, he said to him, follow me.

take care of your conduct. if your brother offend you, rebuke him, and if he repent, forgive him.

Let the christian doctrine be the familiar subject of your entertainment: in all wisdom instructing and exhorting one another, in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, melodiously tuning your grateful praises to God.

and we exhort you, brethren, reprove the disorderly, comfort the pusillanimous, support the weak, and be patient toward all men.

and if any one should disregard what we have prescrib'd, signify it to us by letter, and don't converse with him, that he may be put to shame. however, don't treat him as an enemy, but reprove him as a brother.

to preach the word with assiduity upon all occasions: reprove, censure, exhort, with the most tender persuasions.

these things remonstrate: recommend and enforce with all your authority: guard yourself against all contempt.

A man that is an heretick, after the first and second admonition, avoid:

upon which Peter said, Ananias, how could satan inspire thine heart to lye to the holy ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? was not the estate your own estate? and was not the price for which it was sold, all in your own hands? how came such a design as this in your heart? thou hast not lyed unto men, but unto God.

But when Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, for he was to be blamed. for till certain Jews came thither from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, for fear of those, who were for circumcision: and the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas himself was carried away with their hypocrisy.read more.
but when I saw, they conformed not their conduct to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all: if you being a Jew, live after the manner of the Gentiles, and not according to that of the Jews, why do you constrain the Gentiles to judaize?
