Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, No, father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

It is expedient, therefore, that the bishop be blameless, the husband of only one wife, vigilant, temperate, of worldly affections mortified, given to hospitality, apt to teach; not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain, but gentle, not contentious, not covetous;

For the bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God; not arrogant, not quick to anger, not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain,

Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

It is not good to eat much honey, so for men to search their own glory is not glory.

Do not be among those who are drunk with wine; nor among gluttonous eaters of food; for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall cause them to wear rags.

He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich.

Whosoever keeps the law is a wise son, but he that is a companion of gluttons shames his father.

One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies.

Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning that they may continue their drunkenness; that continue until night until wine inflames them! And the harp and the viol, the tambourine and flutes and wine are in their feasts; but they do not regard the work of the LORD, nor consider the work of his hands.

For they shall eat and not be satisfied; they shall commit whoredom and shall not increase because they have quit showing hospitality unto the LORD. Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

Wine makes a mocker, and beer a reveler, and whoever errs concerning them shall never be wise.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; which I denounce, as I have also told you in time past that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

And be not drunk with wine, in which there is excess, but be filled with the Spirit,

nor thieves nor covetous nor drunkards nor revilers nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you, but now ye are washed, but now ye are sanctified, but now ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and in the Spirit of our God. All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.read more.
Foods are for the belly, and the belly for foods; but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

For it should suffice us that during the time past of our life we had done the will of the Gentiles, when we conversed in lasciviousness, lusts, drunkenness, gluttony, orgies, and abominable idolatries.

receiving the reward of their unrighteousness, as those that count it pleasure to live luxuriously every day. These are spots and blemishes, who eat together with you, while at the same time they revel in their deceit,
