but to what shall I compare this generation? they are like children sitting in the markets, and calling out to their fellows,
To what therefore shall I compare the men of this generation? who are they like?
this may be illustrated by a comparison taken from a fig-tree: when the branches become tender, and push out their leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: in like manner, when ye shall see all these things happen, know that he is come to your very doors. I declare unto you, the present generation shall not cease, till all these things are pass'd.
Consider this similitude taken from a fig-tree: when its branch is yet tender, and pushes out its leaves, you know that summer is near: so when you shall see these things happen, know that he is nigh, even at your doors. I declare unto you, this generation shall not be extinct, till all these things be transacted.
Then by way of similitude, consider, said he, the fig-tree, and all the other trees; when they shoot out their buds, you know for certain that summer is coming on: in like manner, when you shall see these events, be assur'd that the kingdom of God is nigh.read more.

but he answered them, this wicked degenerate race demand a miracle; but no other miracle shall they have, except that of the prophet Jonas. for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. the men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment against this generation, and shall condemn it, because they were converted at the preaching of Jonas, and now there is one superiour to Jonas here.read more.

the people of Nineve shall rise up in the day of Judgment, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; but now, a greater than Jonas is here.
When an unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he roams about the deserts, seeking rest, and findeth none. I will return then, says he, into my house, which I have quitted; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. then he goes and takes seven other spirits besides himself, but more mischievous than himself, and they all enter in and lodge there: so that the last state of that man is worse than the first. just so shall it likewise fare with this wicked generation.
a wicked degenerate race demand a miracle; but no miracle shall they have beside that of the prophet Jonas. and so leaving them, he went away.
but Jesus fetching a deep sigh, said, why does this generation require a sign? I assure you, they shall have none.
upon which Jesus answered, incredulous and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?
then said Jesus, incredulous people, how long shall I be with you? must I be always assisting you? bring him before me.
then said Jesus, O incredulous, and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring hither your son.
ye serpents, ye brood of vipers, how can ye escape the punishment of Gehenna? wherefore I shall send you prophets, and wise men, and Scribes; you will kill some, and crucify others, many will ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. so that you maybe charg'd with all the innocent blood shed upon earth, from the blood of Abel the just, unto the blood of Zacharias, the son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.read more.
I declare unto you, all these things shall befall this generation.
wo unto you, for you rebuild the sepulchres of those prophets, whom your fathers put to death: they were guilty of slaughter, and you raise monuments to their memory. agreeably to this, in the Wisdom of God 'tis said, "I will send them prophets and apostles: some they will kill, and others they will persecute:read more.
" so that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed since the creation of the world, may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to that of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple: yes, I assure you, this generation shall be responsible for it all.
At length he said to his disciples, the time will come, when ye will wish to see the son of man appear, and shall not see him. they will tell you, here he is, or, he is there: but don't go out to follow them; for as the lightning flashes from one extremity of the sky to the other, so shall the appearance of the son of man be.read more.
