upon which Jesus answered, incredulous and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?
then said Jesus, incredulous people, how long shall I be with you? must I be always assisting you? bring him before me.
then said Jesus, O incredulous, and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring hither your son.
now if God thus adorns the flower of the field, which thriving to day, is to morrow thrown into the oven, how much more shall he provide for you, if you have any degree of faith?
and he answer'd, why are you afraid, o incredulous people? then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught him, diffident man, said he, why were you in suspence?
which Jesus perceiving, he said, distrustful men, why do ye trouble your heads about forgetting the bread?
now if God thus cloaths the flowers, which exist to-day in the field, and to-morrow are thrown into the oven: how much more will he cloath you, O distrustful men?
because of your incredulity, said Jesus: for I tell you truly, if ye had ever so little faith, ye might say to this mountain, remove hence to yonder place, and it should remove; and nothing would be too difficult for you.
but to his disciples he said, where is your faith? while they, seiz'd with fear and admiration, said to one another, who can this man be, that he commands even the winds, and the waves, and they obey?
they were so marvellously incredulous. so that He went all about to teach in the neighbouring villages.
But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him:
but there are some of you who do not believe. (for Jesus knew from the beginning, who they were that did not believe, and who should betray him.)
immediately the child's father cryed out with tears, I do believe, oh supply the defect of my faith.
he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.
and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; but his testimony doth no man receive.
and said to him, if you are the Christ, say so. but he answer'd, if I should tell you so, you will not believe it.
but if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and believe that the father is in me, and I in him.
therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes,
don't you believe that I am in the father, and the father in me? the words that I speak unto you, I speak indeed, tho' not from my self; but as to the works, the father, who dwells in me, he is the agent.
trusts thereon shall not be confounded. it will prove an honour to you, who believe; but to the incredulous, the same stone, which is the chief of the angle,
but I have already told you, that tho' you have seen me, you do not believe.
I tell you, he will speedily avenge them. however, when the son of man comes, how few of the faithful will he find in the land?
if you don't believe when I tell you what is plain, how should you believe, if I tell you of things more sublime?
how can you believe, who are catching at honour one from another, regardless of that glory that comes from God only?
