One person gives freely,
yet gains more;
another withholds what is right,
only to become poor.
There is a sickening tragedy I have seen under the sun: wealth kept by its owner to his harm.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.
But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. However, he kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge, and brought a portion of it and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
The people are incapable of doing right—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
those who store up violence and destruction
in their citadels.
“Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
“If you want to be perfect,” Jesus said to him, “go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won’t grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
People will curse anyone who hoards grain,
but a blessing will come to the one who sells it.
Though he piles up silver like dust
and heaps up a wardrobe like clay—
he may heap it up, but the righteous will wear it,
and the innocent will divide up his silver.
Come now, you rich people! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you. Your wealth is ruined and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your silver and gold are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You stored up treasure in the last days!
