But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and many unwise and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and ruin. For the love of money is the root of every evil; which some having aspired after, have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
But that that fell where the thorns were, these are they who having heard go away and are choked under cares and riches and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and am grown rich, and have need of nothing, and knowest not that thou art the wretched and the miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked;
Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my daily need: lest I be full and deny thee, and say, Who is Jehovah? or lest I be poor and steal, and outrage the name of my God.
He that oppresseth the poor, it is to enrich him; he that giveth to the rich, bringeth only to want.

As a dream, when one awaketh, wilt thou, Lord, on arising despise their image. When my heart was in a ferment, and I was pricked in my reins, Then I was brutish and knew nothing; I was as a beast with thee. Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden my right hand; Thou wilt guide me by thy counsel, and after the glory, thou wilt receive me. Whom have I in the heavens? and there is none upon earth I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: God is the rock of my heart and my portion for ever. For behold, they that are far from thee shall perish; thou destroyest every one that goeth a whoring from thee. But as for me, it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord Jehovah, that I may declare all thy works.
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust spoils, and where thieves dig through and steal;
Wherefore should I fear in the days of adversity, when the iniquity of my supplanters encompasseth me? -- They depend upon their wealth, and boast themselves in the abundance of their riches. ... None can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, read more.

And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thy heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of them that hate thee, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked for thyself wisdom and knowledge, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
For what does a man profit, if he should gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
