If we say, "We have no sin," we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, "We have not sinned," we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
And in this we know that we have known Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, "I have known Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
Every one who commits sin commits lawlessness also; and sin is lawlessness.

No one, serving as a soldier, entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.
He who says that he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and knows not where he is going, because the darkness blinded his eyes.
