"And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father [his] children, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death,

"Then they will hand you over to persecution and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of my name.

{They will expel you from the synagogue}, but an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think they are offering service to God.

And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, but instead be afraid of the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Do not be afraid of [the things] which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw [some] of you into prison so that you may be tested, and you will experience affliction ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life on account of me will find it.

Then Paul replied, "What are you doing weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus!"

You have not yet resisted to the point of [shedding your] blood [as you] struggle against sin.

And to each one of them a white robe was given, and it was said to them that they should rest yet a short time, until [the number of] their fellow slaves and their brothers who were about to be killed as they [had been] were completed also.

And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. And {I was greatly astonished when I saw her}.

And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints and all those who had been slaughtered on the earth.

so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation!

Rejoice over her, heaven and the saints and the apostles and the prophets, because God has pronounced your judgment on her!" And one powerful angel picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw [it] into the sea, saying, "In this way Babylon the great city will be thrown down with violence, and will never be found again! And the sound of harpists and musicians and flute players and trumpeters will never be heard in you again! And every craftsman of every trade will never be found in you again! And the sound of a mill will never be heard in you again!read more.
And the light of a lamp will never shine in you again! And the sound of a bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again! For your merchants were the most important people of the earth, because with your sorcery they deceived all the nations. And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints and all those who had been slaughtered on the earth.

Then they conspired against him and stoned him [with] stones at the command of the king in the courtyard of the house of Yahweh.

And immediately the king sent an executioner [and] ordered [him] to bring his head. And he went [and] beheaded him in the prison.

So he executed James the brother of John with a sword.

They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they died by murder with a sword, they wandered about in sheepskins, in goatskins, impoverished, afflicted, mistreated,

And when he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the word of God and because of the testimony which they had,
