You say, "I am rich; I have become wealthy, and have need of nothing"and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,

In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand; and seeing you will see and not perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull. And their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and they understand with their hearts, and turn so that I should heal them.'

Remember then from where you have fallen, repent and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will to do what is good, but I cannot do it.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

Likewise you that are younger men be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.

But the brother of humble circumstances is to glory in his high position;

For you had compassion on the prisoners, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.

They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated of whom the world was not worthy wandering in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. because God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, kept in heaven for you,

as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Listen, my beloved brethren: has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those who love him?

I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and I know the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
