And a man of the house of Levi went and took to wife a daughter of Levi, who conceived and gave birth to a son, and seeing that he was beautiful, she hid him three months. And his sister stood afar off to see what would happen to him. And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river, and walking with her maidens along by the river's side, she saw the ark among the reeds; she sent her maid to bring it. And when she had opened it, she saw the child, and, behold, the babe wept. And having compassion on him, she said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.
For the LORD shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he had given to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves, provoking the LORD to anger.
Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast and an acceptable day to the LORD?
A bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoking flax he shall not quench until he sends forth judgment unto victory.
He shall not break a bruised reed, nor shall he quench the smoking flax; he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod, and he said unto me, Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those that worship therein.
Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. The ancient and venerable to look upon is the head; the prophet that teaches lies, he is the tail.
The LORD has mingled a perverse spirit in its midst, and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit. Neither shall it be of any value unto Egypt, any work which the head or tail, branch or rush, may do.
And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou didst brake and make all their loins to come to nothing.
