Behold also the ships, large as they are, and driven along by fierce winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wheresoever the impulse of the steersman wills. So also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how small a fire kindles how great a forest! And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity! the tongue is placed among our members, as that which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of life, and is set on fire by Hell. For every nature, both of wild beasts and birds, both of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed, by mankind; but the tongue no man can tame; a restless evil, full of deadly poison! Therewith we bless the Lord and Father; and therewith we curse men, who have been made after the likeness of God. Out of the same mouth come forth blessing and cursing! My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Does the fountain send forth, from the same opening, the sweet water and the bitter, My brethren, can a fig tree produce olives; or a vine, figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.
Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but whatever is good for the supplying of the need, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Ye know this, my beloved brethren; but let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;
Consequently, faith comes of hearing; and hearing, through the word of Christ.
Also with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation!" Those, therefore, who gladly received his word, were immersed; and there were added to them on that day about three thousand souls;
And, having arranged for him a day, there came to him to his lodging a greater number, to whom he was expounding, fully testifying as to the Kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening. And some were believing the things spoken, and some were disbelieving.
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts; ready always for an answer to every one who asks of you an account concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear;
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth; Who, when reviled, reviled not again; when suffering, was not threatening, but committed Himself to Him Who judgeth righteously;
But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure Thee by the living God, that Thou tell us whether Thou art the Christ, the Son of God"
But He was silent, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, and says to Him, "Art Thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"
And He did not answer him, not even to one word; so that the governor greatly wondered.
And he kept questioning Him in many words; but He answered him nothing.
When, therefore, Pilate heard this saying, he was the more afraid; and he entered again into the Praetorium, and says to Jesus, "Whence art Thou?" But Jesus gave him no answer.
"Broods of vipers! how can ye speak good things, being yourselves evil? For, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. The good man, out of his good treasure, puts forth good things; and the evil man, out of his evil treasure, puts forth evil things. And I say to you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account concerning it in the day of judgment;read more.
for by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned."
And, having called the multitude near, He said to them, "Hear, and understand: Not that which enters into the mouth defiles the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth??his defiles the man." Then, His disciples, coming near, say to Him, "Knowest Thou that the Pharisees, having heard the saying, were made to stumble?"read more.
But He, answering, said, "Every plant which My Heavenly Father did not plant shall be rooted up. Let them alone; they are blind guides; and if a blind man be guiding a blind man, both will fall into a pit." And Peter, answering, said to Him, "Explain to us the parable." And He said, "Are ye also even yet without understanding? Do ye not perceive that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and is cast forth into the drain? But the things that proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and these defile the man. For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false-witnessings, blasphemies: these are the things which defile the man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man."
And, again calling the multitude, He said to them, "Hear Me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing from without the man, that, entering into him, can defile him; but the things proceeding out of the man are those that defile the man." OMITTED TEXT.read more.
And, when He entered into the house from the multitude, His disciples asked of Him the parable. And He saith to them, "Are ye too thus without understanding? Do ye not perceive that nothing, entering into a man from without, can defile him; because it goes not into his heart, but into the belly, and passes out into the drain?" This He said, making all foods clean. And He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, wantonness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man."
"The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and the evil, out of the evil treasure brings forth that which is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart does his mouth speak.
If anyone thinks that he is religious, while he bridles not his own tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
