they answered, you were a vicious fellow from your very birth, and do you pretend to preach to us? and then they excommunicated him. Jesus having heard that they had excommunicated him; and meeting with the man, he said to him, do you believe on the son of God?

for having himself stood the test of sufferings, he is capable of being moved to relieve those who undergo such tryals.
Blessed be the God, and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of mercies, and the God of all consolation: who comforteth me in all my tribulations, that I may be able to comfort them who are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith I myself am comforted of God.
If then there be any christian consolation, any charitable relief, any communion of the spirit, if any tenderness of compassion,
bless them, but curse not. rejoice with those that do rejoice, and weep with those that weep.
be mutually kind, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
be you therefore adorn'd with a compassionate temper, with benevolence, humility, meekness, patience as becometh saints and chosen favourites of God: bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, when one has any cause of complaint against another: as the Lord forgave you, do you likewise forgive.
In a word, live all of you in perfect agreement and sympathy, be full of fraternal love, compassion, and affability.
remember those that are in chains, as if you were confin'd with them; and those who suffer adversity, as being your selves of the same body.

Then he return'd, and having found them sleeping, he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? could you not watch one hour?
for when I came to Macedonia, I had no respit from the trouble that beset me on every side: oppositions from without, and apprehensions within. nevertheless, God who comforteth those that are cast down, gave me comfort by the arrival of Titus: not barely by his presence, but by the consolation I received from you by him, when he acquainted me with your earnest desire to see me, with your concern, and your zeal for me; which greatly increas'd my joy.

but take care that this liberty of yours does not prove a scandal to the weak. for if any man see you who have a just notion of idols, sitting at table in their temple, will not the person who is wrong in his notions be incouraged to eat what is offered to idols, tho' contrary to his own opinion? so that your notions may endanger the life of thy weak brother, for whom Christ died.read more.
but when you thus offend against the brethren, by wounding their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
we behav'd to you with a tender regard, even as a mother, who nurses her own children.
adore the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready to show with modesty and respect to every one that asks it, what ground there is for the expectations you have:
Then they brought children to him in order to have his blessing: and the disciples rebuked them.
Then they brought young children to him, that he might lay his hands upon them: but his disciples rebuked those that presented them.

but they would not entertain him, because he appear'd to them, as if he was going to Jerusalem. his disciples James and John observing this, said, Lord, shall we command fire to descend from heaven, as Elias did, in order to consume them?

yet to us there is but one God, the father, from whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. But every one has not this knowledge: for some still imagine the idol represents a deity: and eat the meat under the notion of an offering to such a being: by which erroneous opinion they are infected with idolatry. meat does not recommend us to God: if we eat, we are not the better men; if we don't eat, we are not the worse.
this may be illustrated by a comparison taken from a fig-tree: when the branches become tender, and push out their leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: in like manner, when ye shall see all these things happen, know that he is come to your very doors. I declare unto you, the present generation shall not cease, till all these things are pass'd.
Consider this similitude taken from a fig-tree: when its branch is yet tender, and pushes out its leaves, you know that summer is near: so when you shall see these things happen, know that he is nigh, even at your doors.
Then by way of similitude, consider, said he, the fig-tree, and all the other trees; when they shoot out their buds, you know for certain that summer is coming on:

for all that God has created is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it be receiv'd with thanksgiving:
wherefore God abandon'd them to the impure passions of their own hearts, so that they themselves dishonour'd their own bodies; they changed the true God for an idol, and adored and served the creature more than the creator, who is blessed for ever.
