Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;

Every one that passeth among them that are numbered from twenty years old and above, shall give an offering to the LORD. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth. There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
