He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

A soft answer turneth away fury; but a grievous word stirreth up anger.

But I say unto you, not to resist evil; but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;

with all lowliness and meekness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love;

The overseer then must be irreproachable, husband of one wife, sober, discreet, decorous, hospitable, apt to teach; not given to excesses from wine, not a striker, but mild, not addicted to contention, not fond of money,

And a bondman of the Lord ought not to contend, but be gentle towards all; apt to teach; forbearing;

But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned.

And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, If now Joseph should be hostile to us, and should indeed requite us all the evil that we did to him! And they sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, Thy father commanded before he died, saying, Thus shall ye speak to Joseph: Oh forgive, I pray thee, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin! for they did evil to thee. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly, and a man of mischievous devices is hated.

Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself: it would be only to do evil.

The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger, and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Be angry, and do not sin; let not the sun set upon your wrath, neither give room for the devil.

For the rest, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are noble, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are amiable, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if any praise, think on these things.

So that, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for man's wrath does not work God's righteousness.

Wherefore, having girded up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope with perfect stedfastness in the grace which will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

But for this very reason also, using therewith all diligence, in your faith have also virtue, in virtue knowledge, in knowledge temperance, in temperance endurance, in endurance godliness, in godliness brotherly love, in brotherly love love:

But I say, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall no way fulfil flesh's lust. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these things are opposed one to the other, that ye should not do those things which ye desire; but if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under law.

So that, my beloved, even as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much rather in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you both the willing and the working according to his good pleasure.

For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion.
