you have met with no trials yet, but such as are common to men: and God who is faithful, will not suffer you to be tempted above your strength; but will with the temptation make a way to escape, by enabling you to bear it.

where other seed fell, denotes the man that heareth the word, and at first receives it with pleasure: but having no root in him he has only an occasional faith: for as soon as any oppression or persecution arises upon account of the gospel, he presently relapses.

in like manner, they who receive seed on stony-ground, are such as upon hearing the word, do immediately receive it with joy. but having no root at the bottom, they are only occasional professors, for if they meet with any trouble or persecution upon account of the word, immediately they revolt.

by the stony ground is understood such persons as receive indeed the doctrines they hear, with joy: but for want of resolution, believe only occasionally, and desert when the trial comes.

Then said Jesus to his disciples, it is impossible but that discouragements should come: but wo to him, who is the occasion of them.

what I do I allow not: for what my mind leads me to, that do I not; but what I have an aversion to, that I do.

wherefore let him that thinks he stands firm, take heed lest he fall.

but I fear lest by some means or other, as Eve was beguiled by the subtilly of the serpent, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is due to Christ.

This it is that fills you with joy, notwithstanding the various tryals, which still necessarily afflict you,

but he denied it again, and swore I don't know the man. soon after they that stood by coming up, said to Peter, certainly you are one of them, for thy speech bewrays thee. then he fell to solemn imprecations, and swore, "I don't know the man." and immediately the cock crew: when Peter remembred what Jesus had said to him, "before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." and he went out, and wept bitterly.

now as they had made a fire in the middle of the hall, and people were sitting all round it, Peter too sat down among them. but one of the servants seeing him by the fire, star'd him in the face, and said, this man was with him too. but he renounc'd Jesus, saying, woman, I don't know him.read more.
a little while after another seeing him, said, you are even one of them. but Peter said to him, man, I am not. about an hour after another confidently affirm'd, saying, this fellow was certainly with him; for he too is a Galilean. Peter reply'd, man, I don't know what you would say, and immediately while he was yet speaking, the cock crew. whereupon the Lord turned about, and look'd upon Peter. then Peter remembred what the Lord had said to him, "before the cock-crowing you shall deny me thrice." and Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

whilst Peter stood without at the door. but that other disciple, who was known to the high priest went out, and spoke to her that kept the door, who let Peter in. then said the damsel, that kept the door, to Peter, are you also one of this man's disciples? I am not, said he. now the servants and officers that were there, had made a coal-fire, for it was cold, to warm themselves: and Peter stood warming himself among them.

as Simon Peter then stood there warming himself: they said to him, art not thou also one of his disciples? which he denied, and said, I am not. one of the servants of the high priest, kinsman to him whose ear Peter struck off, said, did not I see thee in the garden with him? but Peter denied this too, and immediately the cock crew.

What shall we conclude then from this? if God be for us, who can be against us?

yet after all we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. for I am fully persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, neither the high, nor the low, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God by Christ Jesus our Lord.

not an high priest who is incapable of compassionating our miseries; since he was exposed to the same trials as we are, sin only excepted. let us therefore approach with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may obtain the seasonable assistance of divine mercy and favour.

let your morals be free from avarice, being contented with what you have: for he hath said, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

My dear children, these things I write unto you, that ye may avoid sin. but if any man has failed, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the just.

ye are of God, my dear children, and you have overcome them: because he that is in you, is superior to him that is in the world.

because you have kept my precept about patience, I also will keep you in the time of persecution, which shall happen to all the world, to try the inhabitants of the earth.
