Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
The rich rules over the poor,
And the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.
The wicked borrows and does not pay back,
But the righteous is gracious and gives.
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
The plans of the diligent lead surely to advantage,
But everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.
Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles,
But the one who gathers by labor increases it.
For the Lord your God will bless you as He has promised you, and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow; and you will rule over many nations, but they will not rule over you.
A man lacking in sense pledges
And becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor.
The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.
Do not be among those who give pledges,
Among those who become guarantors for debts.
If you have nothing with which to pay,
Why should he take your bed from under you?
“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a remission of debts. This is the manner of remission: every creditor shall release what he has loaned to his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor and his brother, because the Lord’s remission has been proclaimed.
Go to the ant, O sluggard,
Observe her ways and be wise,
Which, having no chief,
Officer or ruler,
Prepares her food in the summer
And gathers her provision in the harvest.
A prudent man sees evil and hides himself,
The naive proceed and pay the penalty.
Know well the condition of your flocks,
And pay attention to your herds;
On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.
It is well with the man who is gracious and lends;
He will maintain his cause in judgment.
He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
Do not be among those who give pledges,
Among those who become guarantors for debts.
He who is guarantor for a stranger will surely suffer for it,
But he who hates being a guarantor is secure.
Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.
Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
“If a man borrows anything from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he shall make full restitution.
“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.
Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
