but Jesus answered him, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God shall prescribe." then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him, if you are the Son of God, throw your self down: for it is written, "he will charge his angels to take care of you, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest you bruise your foot against a stone." Jesus replied, it is likewise written, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things, said he, will I give you, if you will prostrate your self and worship me. Then said Jesus to him, get thee hence Satan: for it it written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve ." whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.
Now Jesus being full of the holy spirit, return'd from Jordan, and was led by the spirit into the desart, being forty days tempted by the devil, without eating any thing all that while: but that time expired, he at last was seiz'd with hunger. then the devil said to him; if you are the son of God, command this stone to become bread.read more.

for having himself stood the test of sufferings, he is capable of being moved to relieve those who undergo such tryals.
not an high priest who is incapable of compassionating our miseries; since he was exposed to the same trials as we are, sin only excepted. let
I have authoriz'd you to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and triumph over all the power of the enemy; so that nothing shall be capable of doing you any mischief.
neither yield your members as instruments to iniquity: but yield yourselves unto God, as being alive after having been dead; and your members as instruments of righteousness.
are you angry? have a care you don't sin. "let not the sun go down upon your wrath," lest the devil take hold of the opportunity.
put on the set of divine armour, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. for our conflict is not barely with men, but with principalities, with potentates, with the princes of darkness, with wicked aereal spirits. wherefore invest yourselves with the set of divine armour, that ye may be able to withstand in the difficult day, and having overcome all to maintain your ground.
Be temperate, be vigilant: for your adversary the Devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. resist him by the steadiness of your faith, considering that your brethren among the Gentiles, suffer the same persecutions as you do.
Do you then, my dear brethren, being thus forewarn'd, take care not to be seduc'd by those prophane impostors, and so lose the reward of your constancy.
I write to you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked spirit. I write to you, little children, because ye have known the father. I write to you, fathers, because you have known him that is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked spirit.
but as for you, the Lord, who is faithful, will establish you, and protect you from the malicious one.
we know that a true christian will not commit such a sin, for he that is the child of God keeps upon his guard, so that the wicked spirit does not approach him.
I do not pray you to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the malignity of it.
and let us not be left under temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
Then said Jesus, Simon, Simon, satan has demanded to shake you, and my disciples, like wheat in a sieve. but as for thee, I have pray'd that you faith may not fail. do you in return establish thy brethren.
put on the set of divine armour, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
and having divested principalitys and powers, he made them an example of obedience, and caus'd them to triumph in Christ.
now is this world condemn'd: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last.
that at the name of Jesus both angels and men, the living and the dead, should pay their adorations,
they that believe shall be endued with these miraculous gifts: in my name they shall cast out demons: they shall speak new languages: they shall handle serpents, and if they drink any mortal poison, it shall do them no hurt: they shall lay hands on the sick, and the sick shall recover.
At length the seventy return'd with great joy, saying, Lord, even the demons have been made subject to us by virtue of your name.
this she did for several days, till Paul tir'd with it turn'd about, and said to the spirit, in the name of Jesus Christ I command you to quit her; and instantly he came out.
for I am fully persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, neither the high, nor the low, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God by Christ Jesus our Lord.
I have struggled in a glorious cause: I have finish'd my career: I have stood to the faith: I have nothing more to do, but to receive the crown of virtue reserv'd for me, which the Lord, the just judge, will give me in that day: and not only to me, but to those also, who have long'd for his appearance.
happy is he that can stand the tryal: for when he has undergone the test, he shall receive that crown of life which the Lord has promised to those that love him.
he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches, to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of my God."
he that overcometh, the same shall be cloathed in white raiment; I will not efface his name out of the book of life, but I will own him before my father, and before his angels.
