1 Corinthians 10

¹ Now I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the fact that all of our ancestors who left Egypt were under the cloud. They all went through the sea,

¹ For ^(A)I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all ^(B)under the cloud and all ^(C)passed through the sea;

¹ Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;

¹ Now I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers^(A) were all under the cloud,^(B) all passed through the sea,^(C)

¹ For I do not want you to be unaware, believers, that our fathers were all under the cloud [in which God’s presence went before them] and they all passed [miraculously and safely] through the [Red] Sea;^(A)

³ They all ate the same spiritual food

³ and all ^(E)ate the same spiritual food;

³ And did all eat the same spiritual meat;

³ They all ate the same spiritual food,^(F)

³ and all [of them] ate the same ^(a)spiritual food;^(B)

⁵ But God wasn't pleased with most of those people, and so they were struck down in the wilderness.

⁵ Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for ^(G)they were laid low in the wilderness.

⁵ But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁵ But God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.^(I)

⁵ Nevertheless, God was not well-pleased with ^(c)most of them, for they were scattered along the ground in the wilderness [because their lack of self-control led to disobedience which led to death].^(D)

⁷ Let's stop being idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to play."

⁷ Do not be ^(J)idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “^(K)The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to ^(L)play.”

⁷ Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

⁷ Don’t become idolaters^(L) as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and got up to play.^(b)(M)(c)

⁷ Do not be worshipers of handmade gods, as some of them were; just as it is written [in Scripture], “The people sat down to eat and drink [after sacrificing to the ^(d)golden calf at Horeb], and stood up to play [indulging in immoral activities].”^(F)

⁹ Let's stop putting the Lord to the test, as some of them were doing, and were destroyed by snakes.

⁹ Nor let us try the Lord, as ^(O)some of them ^(c)did, and were destroyed by the serpents.

⁹ Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.

⁹ Let us not test Christ as some of them did^(e) and were destroyed by snakes.^(P)

⁹ We must not tempt the Lord [that is, test His patience, question His purpose or exploit His goodness], as some of them did—and they were killed by serpents.^(H)

¹¹ These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down as a warning for us in whom the culmination of the ages has been attained.

¹¹ Now these things happened to them as an ^(S)example, and ^(T)they were written for our instruction, upon whom ^(U)the ends of the ages have come.

¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

¹¹ Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us,^(T) on whom the ends of the ages^(U) have come.^(V)

¹¹ Now these things happened to them as an example and warning [to us]; they were written for our instruction [to admonish and equip us], upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and ^(W)God is faithful, who will not allow you to be ^(X)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

¹³ There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

¹³ No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful,^(X) and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape^(Y) so that you are able to bear it.

¹³ No temptation [regardless of its source] has overtaken or enticed you that is not common to human experience [nor is any temptation unusual or beyond human resistance]; but God is faithful [to His word—He is compassionate and trustworthy], and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability [to resist], but along with the temptation He [has in the past and is now and] will [always] provide the way out as well, so that you will be able to endure it [without yielding, and will overcome temptation with joy].

¹⁵ I am talking to sensible people. Apply what I am saying to yourselves.

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

¹⁵ I am speaking as to wise people. Judge for yourselves what I say.

¹⁵ I am speaking as to wise and sensible people; judge [carefully and thoughtfully consider] for yourselves what I say.

¹⁷ Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body, because all of us eat from the same loaf.

¹⁷ Since there is one ^(f)bread, we ^(AC)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one ^(g)bread.

¹⁷ For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

¹⁷ Because there is one bread, we who are many are one^(AC) body, for all of us share that one bread.

¹⁷ Since there is one bread, we [believers] who are many are [united into] one body; for we all partake of the one bread [which represents the body of Christ].

¹⁹ Am I suggesting that an offering made to idols means anything, or that an idol itself means anything?

¹⁹ What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or ^(AF)that an idol is anything?

¹⁹ What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

¹⁹ What am I saying then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?

¹⁹ What do I mean then? That a thing offered to idols is anything [special or changed simply because it is offered], or that an idol is anything?

²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot dine with the Lord and dine with demons,

^{21 (AH)}You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and ^(AI)the table of demons.

²¹ Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot share in the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

²¹ You cannot drink [both] the Lord’s cup and the cup of demons. You cannot share in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons [thereby becoming partners with them].

²³ Everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.

^{23 (AL)}All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things ^(AM)edify.

²³ All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

²³ “Everything is permissible,”^(j)(k) but not everything is helpful. “Everything is permissible,”^(l) but not everything builds up.

²³ All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].

²⁵ Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without raising any question about it on the grounds of conscience,

^{25 (AO)}Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake;

²⁵ Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

²⁵ Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake,

²⁵ [Regarding meat offered to idols:] Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking any questions for the sake of your conscience,

²⁷ If an unbeliever invites you to his house and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, raising no question on the grounds of conscience.

²⁷ If ^(AQ)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, ^(AR)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake.

²⁷ If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

²⁷ If one of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions of conscience.

²⁷ If one of the unbelievers invites you [to a meal at his home] and you want to go, eat whatever is served to you without asking questions [about its source] for the sake of your conscience.

²⁹ I mean, of course, his conscience, not yours. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else's conscience?

²⁹ I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for ^(AT)why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?

²⁹ Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

²⁹ I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged^(AJ) by another person’s conscience?

²⁹ and by conscience I mean for the sake of the other man’s, not yours. For ^(g)why is my freedom [of choice] judged by another’s conscience [another’s ethics—another’s sense of right and wrong]?

³¹ Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

³¹ Whether, then, you eat or drink or ^(AW)whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

³¹ Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

³¹ Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory.^(AL)

³¹ So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God.

³³ just as I myself try to please everybody in every way. I don't look out for my own benefit, but rather for the benefit of many people, so that they might be saved.

³³ just as I also ^(AZ)please all men in all things, ^(BA)not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, ^(BB)so that they may be saved.

³³ Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

³³ just as I also try to please all people in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many,^(AN) so that they may be saved. >

³³ just as I please everyone in all things [as much as possible adapting myself to the interests of others], not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, so that they [will be open to the message of salvation and] may be saved.
