The Chief Priests And Scribes Plot To Kill Jesus

1 Now the feast of Unleavened Bread (which is called Passover) was drawing near.

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

1 (A)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the (B)Passover, was approaching.

1 The(A) Festival of Unleavened Bread,(B) which is called Passover,(C) was drawing near.

1 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near.

2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they could destroy him, because they were afraid of the people.

2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

2 The chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how they might put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people.

2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death,(D) because they were afraid of the people.(E)

2 So the high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the crowd.

Judas Arranges To Betray Jesus

3 And Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.

3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

3 (D)And (E)Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, (a)belonging to the number of the twelve.

3 Then(F) Satan entered Judas,(G) called Iscariot,(H) who was numbered among the Twelve.

3 But Satan went into Judas called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve.

4 And he went away [and] discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he could betray him to them.

4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and (F)officers how he might betray Him to them.

4 He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police(I) how he could hand Him over(J) to them.

4 So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them.

5 And they were delighted, and came to an agreement with him to give [him] money.

5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

5 They were glad and agreed to give him money.

5 They were glad and agreed to give him silver.(a)

5 They were delighted, and agreed to give him money.

6 And he agreed, and began looking for a favorable opportunity to betray him to them apart from the crowd.

6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

6 So he consented, and began seeking a good opportunity to betray Him to them (b)apart from the crowd.

6 So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them when the crowd was not present.

6 Judas accepted their offer and began to look for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present.

Jesus' Final Passover With The Disciples

7 And the day of the feast of Unleavened Bread came, on which it was necessary [for] the Passover lamb to be sacrificed.

7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.

7 (G)Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which (H)the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

7 Then(K) the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(L)

7 Then the day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed.

8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, "Go [and] prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat [it].

8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.

8 And Jesus sent (I)Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.”

8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(M) saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”

8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal."

9 So they said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare [it]?"

9 And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

9 They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”

9 “Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked Him.

9 They asked him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?"

10 And he said to them, "Behold, [when] you have entered into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.

10 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters.

10 “Listen,” He said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters.

10 He told them, "Just after you go into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters

11 And you will say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" '

11 And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

11 And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’

11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?”’

11 and say to the owner of the house, "The Teacher asks you, "Where is the room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?"'

12 And he will show you a large furnished upstairs room. Make preparations there."

12 And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

12 And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.”

12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.(N) Make the preparations there.”

12 Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished. Get things ready for us there."

13 So they went [and] found [everything] just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

13 So they went and found it just as He had told them,(O) and they prepared the Passover.

13 So they went and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

The Lord's Supper

14 And when the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him.

14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

14 (J)When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and (K)the apostles with Him.

14 When(P) the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him.

14 Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table, along with his apostles.

15 And he said to them, "{I have earnestly desired} to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

15 And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

15 Then He said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

15 He told them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer,

16 For I tell you that I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."

16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

16 for I say to you, I shall never again eat it (L)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again(b) until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”(Q)

16 because I tell all of you, I will never eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God."

17 And he took in hand a cup, [and] [after] giving thanks he said, "Take this and share [it] among yourselves.

17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

17 (M)And when He had taken a cup and (N)given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;

17 Then He took a cup,(R) and after giving thanks,(S) He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves.

17 Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves,

18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

18 for (O)I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”

18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

18 because I tell you, from now on I will never drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

19 And he took bread, [and] [after] giving thanks, he broke [it] and gave [it] to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

19 And when He had taken some bread and (P)given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

19 And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is My body,(T) which is given for you. Do this in remembrance(U) of Me.”

19 Then he took a loaf of bread, gave thanks, broke it in pieces, and handed it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Keep on doing this in memory of me."

20 And in the same way the cup after [they] had eaten, saying, "This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you.

20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is (Q)poured out for you is the (R)new covenant in My blood.

20 In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant(V) established by My blood;(W) it is shed for you.(c)

20 He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant sealed by my blood, which is being poured out for you.

A Final Discourse

21 "But behold, the hand of the one who is betraying me [is] with me on the table!

21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

21 (S)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with (c)Mine on the table.

21 But(X) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me!(Y)

21 Yet look! The hand of the man who is betraying me is with me on the table!

22 For the Son of Man is going according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!"

22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (T)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,(Z) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

22 The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!"

23 And they began to debate with one another who then of them it could be who was going to do this.

23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.

23 So they began to argue(AA) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.

23 Then they began to discuss among themselves which one of them was going to do this.

A Dispute About Who Is Greatest

24 And a dispute also occurred among them as to which of them was recognized as being greatest.

24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

24 And there arose also (U)a dispute among them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest.

24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.(AB)

24 Now an argument sprang up among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

25 So he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called benefactors.

25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’

25 But He said to them,(AC) “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called(d) ‘Benefactors.’(e)

25 But he told them, "The kings of the unbelievers lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.

26 But you [are] not [to be] like this! But the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves.

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

26 But it is not this way with you, (W)but the one who is the greatest among you must become like (X)the youngest, and the leader like the servant.

26 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you must become like the youngest,(AD) and whoever leads, like the one serving.

26 But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you should become like the youngest, and the one who leads should become like the one who serves.

27 For who [is] greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? [Is it] not the one who reclines at the table? But I am in your midst as the one who serves.

27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

27 For (Y)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But (Z)I am among you as the one who serves.

27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves.(AE)

27 Because who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? It is the one at the table, isn't it? But I'm among you as one who serves.

28 "And you are the ones who have remained with me in my trials,

28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

28 “You are those who have stood by Me in My (AA)trials;

28 You are the ones who stood by Me in My trials.(AF)

28 "You are the ones who have always stood by me in my trials.

29 and I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred on me,

29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

29 and just as My Father has granted Me a (AB)kingdom, I grant you

29 I bestow on you a kingdom,(AG) just as My Father bestowed one on Me,

29 And I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred a kingdom on me,

30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30 that you may (AC)eat and drink at My table in My (AD)kingdom, and (AE)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom.(AH) And you will sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.(AI)

30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit down on thrones to govern the twelve tribes of Israel."

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat,

31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AF)Satan has (d)demanded permission to (AG)sift you like wheat;

31 “Simon, Simon,(f) look out! Satan(AJ) has asked to sift you(g) like wheat.(AK)

31 "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat,

32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, [when] once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

32 but I (AH)have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, (AI)strengthen your brothers.”

32 But I have prayed(AL) for you(h) that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen(AM) your brothers.”

32 but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail. When you have come back, you must strengthen your brothers."

33 But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"

33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

33 (AJ)But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!”

33 “Lord,”(AN) he told Him, “I’m ready to go with You both to prison and to death!”

33 Peter told him, "Lord, I am ready to go even to prison and to die with you!"

34 And he said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times [that you] know me!"

34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

34 And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

34 “I tell you, Peter,” He said, “the rooster will not crow today until(i) you deny three times that you know Me!”

34 But Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me."

The Two Swords

35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a money bag and a traveler's bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, [did you]?" And they said, "Nothing."

35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

35 And He said to them, (AK)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.”

35 He also said to them, “When I sent you out(AO) without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?”“Not a thing,” they said.

35 Then Jesus asked his disciples, "When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing at all."

36 And he said to them, "But now the one who has a money bag must take [it], and likewise a traveler's bag. And the one who does not have a sword must sell his cloak and buy [one].

36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

36 And He said to them, “But now, (e)whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and (f)whoever has no sword is to sell his (g)coat and buy one.

36 Then He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one.

36 Then he told them, "But now whoever has a wallet must take it along, and his traveling bag, too. And the one who has no sword must sell his coat and buy one.

37 For I tell you that this that is written must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was counted with the criminals.' For indeed, [what is written] about me {is being fulfilled}."

37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘(AL)And He was numbered with transgressors’; for (AM)that which refers to Me has its (h)fulfillment.”

37 For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted among the outlaws.(AP)(j) Yes, what is written about Me is coming to its fulfillment.”(AQ)

37 Because I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: "He was counted among the criminals.' Indeed, what is written about me must be fulfilled."

38 So they said, "Lord, behold, here [are] two swords!" And he said to them, "It is adequate."

38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (AN)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

38 “Lord,” they said, “look, here are two swords.”“Enough of that!”(k) He told them.

38 So they said, "Lord, look! Here are two swords." He answered them, "Enough of that!"

The Prayer In Gethsemane

39 And he went away [and] proceeded, according to [his] custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him.

39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

39 (AO)And He came out and proceeded (AP)as was His custom to (AQ)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.

39 He went out and made His way(AR) as usual(AS) to the Mount of Olives,(AT) and the disciples followed Him.

39 Then he left and went to the Mount of Olives, as usual. The disciples went with him.

40 And [when] he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not enter into temptation."

40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

40 (AR)When He arrived at the place, He said to them, (AS)Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

40 When He reached the place,(AU) He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”(AV)

40 When he arrived, he told them, "Keep on praying that you may not be tempted."

41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw and {knelt down} [and] began to pray,

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (AT)knelt down and began to pray,

41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray,(AW)

41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray,

42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, take away this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done." [[

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (AU)cup from Me; (AV)yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup(AX) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done."

43 And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

43 (i)Now an (AW)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

43 [Then an angel from heaven(AY) appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

44 And being in anguish, he began praying more fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground.]]

44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

44 And (AX)being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

44 Being in anguish,(AZ) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.](l)

44 In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like large drops of blood falling on the ground.

45 And [when he] got up from the prayer [and] came to the disciples, he found them sleeping from sorrow,

45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,

45 When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.(m)

45 When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow.

46 and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up [and] pray that you will not enter into temptation!"

46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

46 and said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (AY)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

46 “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”

46 He asked them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and keep on praying that you may not be tempted."

The Betrayal And Arrest Of Jesus

47 [While] he was still speaking, behold, [there came] a crowd, and the one named Judas, one of the twelve, leading them. And he approached Jesus to kiss him.

47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

47 (AZ)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him.

47 While(BA) He was still speaking, suddenly a mob was there, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him,

47 While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came close to Jesus to kiss him.

48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

48 But Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49 And [when] those around him saw what was about to happen, they said, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?"

49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (BA)sword?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?”

49 When those who were around Jesus saw what was about to take place, they asked, "Lord, should we attack with our swords?"

50 And a certain one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear.

50 Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered [and] said, "{Stop! No more of this!}" And he touched [his] ear [and] healed him.

51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

51 But Jesus answered and said, (j)Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

51 But Jesus responded, “No more of this!”(n) And touching his ear, He healed him.

51 But Jesus said, "No more of this!" So he touched the wounded man's ear and healed him.

52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come out against him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber?

52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (BB)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (BC)as you would against a robber?

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?(o)

52 Then Jesus told the high priests, the Temple police, and the elders, who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit?

53 Every day [when] I was with you in the temple [courts], you did not stretch out [your] hands against me! But this is your hour and the domain of darkness!"

53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but (k)this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

53 Every day while I was with you in the temple complex,(BB) you never laid a hand on Me. But this is your hour(BC)—and the dominion of darkness.”(BD)

53 While I was with you day after day in the Temple, you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns!"

Jesus Before The Sanhedrin

54 And they arrested him [and] led [him] away and brought [him] into the house of the high priest. But Peter was following at a distance.

54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.

54 (BD)Having arrested Him, they led Him away and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (BE)Peter was following at a distance.

54 They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter(BE) was following at a distance.

54 Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance.

55 And [when they] had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.

55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.

55 (BF)After they had kindled a fire in the middle of (BG)the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them.

55 They(BF) lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard(BG) and sat down together, and Peter sat among them.

55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them.

56 And a certain female slave, seeing him sitting in the light and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him!"

56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.

56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.”

56 When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with Him too.”

56 A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him, and said, "This man was with him, too."

57 But he denied [it], saying, "Woman, I do not know him!"

57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

57 But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know Him!”

57 But he denied it, "I don't know him, woman!" he responded.

58 And after a short time another person saw him [and] said, "You also are [one] of them!" But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"

58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.

58 A little later, (BH)another saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too!”“Man, I am not!” Peter said.

58 A little later, a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them, too." But Peter said, "Mister, I am not!"

59 And [after] about one hour had passed, someone else was insisting, saying, "In truth this man also was with him, because he is also a Galilean!"

59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.

59 After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (BI)for he is a Galilean too.”

59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”

59 About an hour later, another man emphatically asserted, "This man was certainly with him, because he is a Galilean!"

60 But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about!" And immediately, [while] he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

60 But Peter said, "Mister, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

61 And the Lord turned around [and] looked intently at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

61 (BJ)The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (BK)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”

61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.(BH) So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”(BI)

61 Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the word from the Lord, and how he had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

62 And he went outside [and] wept bitterly.

62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

62 So he went outside and cried bitterly.

Jesus Mocked And Beaten

63 And the men who were guarding him began to mock him [while] they beat [him],

63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.

63 (BL)Now the men who were holding (l)Jesus in custody were mocking Him and beating Him,

63 The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.(BJ)

63 Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him.

64 and [after] blindfolding him they repeatedly asked [him], saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?"

64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?

64 and they blindfolded Him and were asking Him, saying, “(BM)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?”

64 After blindfolding Him, they kept(p) asking, “Prophesy! Who hit You?”

64 They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, "Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?"

65 And they were saying many other [things] against him, reviling [him].

65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (BN)blaspheming.

65 And they were saying many other blasphemous(BK) things against Him.

65 And they kept insulting him in many other ways.

Jesus Before The Sanhedrin

66 And when day came, the council of elders of the people gathered, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away to their Sanhedrin,

66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

66 (BO)When it was day, (BP)the (m)Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (BQ)council chamber, saying,

66 When daylight came,(BL) the elders(q) of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,(BM) convened and brought Him before their Sanhedrin.(BN)

66 As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council.

67 saying, "If you are the Christ, tell us!" But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will never believe,

67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:

67 (BR)If You are the (n)Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe;

67 They said,(BO) “If You are the Messiah, tell us.”But He said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe.

67 They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us."

68 and if I ask [you], you will never answer!

68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer.

68 And if I ask you, you will not answer.

68 But he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe me, and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me.

69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

69 (BS)But from now on (BT)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.”(BP)

69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."

70 So they all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am."

70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

70 And they all said, “Are You (BU)the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, (o)(BV)Yes, I am.”

70 They all asked, “Are You, then, the Son of God?”(BQ)And He said to them, “You say that I am.”(BR)

70 Then they all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You said it I AM."

71 And they said, "Why do we have need [of] further testimony? For [we] ourselves have heard [it] from his mouth!"

71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

71 “Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from His mouth?”

71 "Why do we need any more testimony?" they asked. "We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!"
