1 As soon as it was morning the leading priests, along with the [Jewish] elders and experts in the law of Moses and the entire Council, held a conference. Then they tied Jesus up, led Him away and turned Him over to Pilate [the Roman governor].
1 (A)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole (a)(B)Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

1 As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
2 Pilate asked Him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You have said so."
2 (C)Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He *answered him, “It is as you say.”
2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.
2 Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."
4 So, Pilate again asked Him, "Do you not have any answer? Look at how many charges they are bringing against you."
4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!”
4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.
4 Then Pilate(H) questioned Him again, “Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!”
4 So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"
6 Now at the Passover Festival Pilate customarily released whatever prisoner the people asked him to.
6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

7 One prisoner, named Barabbas, was kept chained up in prison along with men who had committed murder during a rebellion.

8 The crowd [then] went to Pilate and asked him to do what he was accustomed to doing for them [i.e., release a prisoner of their choosing during the Passover Festival].
8 The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.
8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.

10 For he perceived that the leading priests had turned Jesus over to him out of envy.

11 But the leading priests stirred up the crowd to insist that Pilate release Barabbas to them instead.

15 So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and after he had Jesus flogged, he turned Him over to be crucified.

17 They placed a purple robe on Him [Note: Matt. 27:28 calls this a "scarlet" robe. In that day, any color with a mixture of "red" in it was often called "purple"], and making a wreath out of thorns, they placed it on His head.

21 (K)They *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to bear His cross.
21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
21 They(Y) forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’ cross.(Z) He was Simon, a Cyrenian,(AA) the father of Alexander and Rufus.(AB)
21 They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.
22 Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha which, being interpreted, means "the place of the skull" [i.e., probably because it was a skull-shaped knoll in appearance].

23 They offered Him wine, mixed with aromatic spices, but He refused to accept it. [Note: Matt. 27:34 calls this "gall," a bitter drug for the purpose of dulling the pain of crucifixion].

29 Those passing by were (m)hurling abuse at Him, (S)wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

29 save yourself and come down from the cross!"

30 In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!
31 In the same way, the leading priests also mocked Him among themselves, along with the experts in the law of Moses, saying, "He saved other people, now he cannot even save himself.
31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(U)He saved others; (n)He cannot save Himself.
31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.
31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes(AR) were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself!
31 Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.
32 This 'Christ, the king of Israel,' let him now come down from the cross so we can see it and believe in him." And the thieves who were being crucified with Him also spoke abusively to Him.
32 Let this Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.
32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

32 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

33 At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")
34 Then at three o'clock Jesus shouted in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama, sabachthani?" [Note: These words were in the commonly spoken Aramaic language], which being interpreted, means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
34 At the (AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “(AB)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

34 When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

35 So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"
36 Then one of the soldiers ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a stick and gave it to Him to drink, saying, "Let him alone; let us see if Elijah comes to take him down [from the cross]."
36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “(r)Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”

39 And when the military officer in charge of one hundred men, who was standing in front of Jesus, saw Him die like that, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."

See John 19:25]; and Salome [i.e., the mother of James and John and wife of Zebedee. See Matt. 27:56].

43 Joseph, from Arimathea, a highly respected member of the [Jewish] Council, who was expecting the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate [i.e., the Roman appointed governor] and asked [him] for the body of Jesus.
43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent member of the Council, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

43 Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.
44 Pilate was amazed that Jesus had already died, and calling the military officer to him, asked how long He had been dead.
44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.
44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.
44 Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died.
44 When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.
45 And when he found out from the military officer, he granted the body to Joseph.

45 Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
46 [Joseph then] brought a linen cloth, and after taking Jesus down from the cross, wrapped the linen cloth around His body and placed it in a grave site that had been cut out of [a ledge of] rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the cave.
46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.
46 After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb(BM) cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone(BN) against the entrance to the tomb.
46 Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.
