Jesus Taken To Pilate

1 As soon as it was morning the leading priests, along with the [Jewish] elders and experts in the law of Moses and the entire Council, held a conference. Then they tied Jesus up, led Him away and turned Him over to Pilate [the Roman governor].

1 (A)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole (a)(B)Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate.

1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

1 As(A) soon as it was morning, the chief priests had a meeting with the elders,(B) scribes,(C) and the whole Sanhedrin.(D) After tying Jesus up, they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate.(E)

1 As soon as it was morning, the high priests convened a meeting with the elders and scribes and the whole Council. They bound Jesus with chains, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2 Pilate asked Him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You have said so."

2 (C)Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He *answered him, “It is as you say.”

2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.

2 So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King(F) of the Jews?”(G)He answered him, “You have said it.”(a)

2 Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus answered him, "You say so."

3 [Then] the leading priests accused Him of many things.

3 The chief priests began to accuse Him (b)harshly.

3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

3 And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things.

3 The high priests kept accusing him of many things.

4 So, Pilate again asked Him, "Do you not have any answer? Look at how many charges they are bringing against you."

4 Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!”

4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.

4 Then Pilate(H) questioned Him again, “Are You not answering anything? Look how many things they are accusing You of!”

4 So Pilate asked him again, "Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!"

5 But still Jesus gave no answer to anything, so that Pilate was amazed.

5 But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed.

5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

5 But Jesus still did not answer anything, so Pilate was amazed.

5 But since Jesus no longer answered, Pilate was astonished.

Pilate Releases Barabbas

6 Now at the Passover Festival Pilate customarily released whatever prisoner the people asked him to.

6 (E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.

6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

6 At(I) the festival(J) it was Pilate’s(K) custom to release for the people a prisoner they requested.

6 At every festival, Pilate would release any one prisoner whom the people requested.

7 One prisoner, named Barabbas, was kept chained up in prison along with men who had committed murder during a rebellion.

7 The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.

7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

7 There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder(L) during the rebellion.(M)

7 Now there was a man in prison named Barabbas. He had been with the insurgents who had committed murder during the rebellion.

8 The crowd [then] went to Pilate and asked him to do what he was accustomed to doing for them [i.e., release a prisoner of their choosing during the Passover Festival].

8 The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.

8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.

8 The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.

8 So the crowd came and began to request that Pilate do for them what he always did.

9 Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews [i.e., Jesus]?"

9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”

9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

9 So Pilate answered them, “Do you want me to release the King(N) of the Jews(O) for you?”

9 Pilate answered them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"

10 For he perceived that the leading priests had turned Jesus over to him out of envy.

10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.

10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

10 For he knew it was because of envy(P) that the chief priests had handed Him over.

10 because he knew that the high priests had handed him over due to jealousy.

11 But the leading priests stirred up the crowd to insist that Pilate release Barabbas to them instead.

11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.

11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.

11 But the high priests stirred up the crowd to get him to release Barabbas for them instead.

12 [So], Pilate again asked them, "Then what shall I do to this one you call the king of the Jews?"

12 Answering again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”

12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

12 Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the One you call the King of the Jews?”

12 So Pilate asked them again, "Then what should I do with the man you call "the King of the Jews'?"

13 And they shouted out again, "Crucify him "

13 They shouted (c)back, “Crucify Him!”

13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.

13 Again they shouted, “Crucify Him!”

13 "Crucify him!" they shouted back.

14 And Pilate said to them, "Why [should we]; what wrong has he done?" But they shouted out even louder, "Crucify him."

14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!”

14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

14 Then Pilate said to them, “Why? What has He done wrong?”But they shouted, “Crucify Him!” all the more.

14 "Why?" Pilate asked them. "What has he done wrong?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"

15 So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and after he had Jesus flogged, he turned Him over to be crucified.

15 Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

15 Then, willing to gratify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. And after having Jesus flogged,(b) he handed Him over to be crucified.

15 So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 Then the soldiers led Jesus away to the courtyard of the governor's headquarters, where they assembled the entire battalion.

16 (H)The soldiers took Him away into (I)the (d)palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman (e)(J)cohort.

16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.

16 Then(Q) the soldiers led Him away into the courtyard (that is, headquarters(R)) and called the whole company together.

16 The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace (that is, the governor's headquarters) and called out the whole guard.

17 They placed a purple robe on Him [Note: Matt. 27:28 calls this a "scarlet" robe. In that day, any color with a mixture of "red" in it was often called "purple"], and making a wreath out of thorns, they placed it on His head.

17 They *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

17 They dressed Him in a purple(S) robe, twisted together a crown(T) of thorns, and put it on Him.

17 They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted some thorns into a victor's crown, and placed it on his head.

18 Then they began "greeting" Him with "Hey, king of the Jews "

18 and they began to acclaim Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

18 And they began to salute Him, “Hail,(U) King(V) of the Jews!”

18 They began to greet him, "Long live the king of the Jews!"

19 They beat His head with a stick, spat on Him, knelt down before Him and [mockingly] worshiped Him.

19 They kept beating His head with a (f)reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him.

19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

19 They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees,(W) they were paying Him homage.

19 They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, kneeling in front of him, and worshiping him.

20 And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off of Him and put His own clothing [back] on Him. Then they led Him out to crucify Him.

20 After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

20 When they had mocked(X) Him, they stripped Him of the purple robe, put His clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.

20 When they had finished making fun of him, they stripped him of the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Jesus Is Crucified

21 They forced a passerby, named Simon of Cyrene [Note: This was a city in the northern African country of Libya], the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the countryside, to go with them so he could carry Jesus' cross [i.e., probably only the cross-beam portion].

21 (K)They *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to bear His cross.

21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.

21 They(Y) forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’ cross.(Z) He was Simon, a Cyrenian,(AA) the father of Alexander and Rufus.(AB)

21 They forced a certain passer-by named Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who happened to be coming in from the country, to carry Jesus' cross.

22 Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha which, being interpreted, means "the place of the skull" [i.e., probably because it was a skull-shaped knoll in appearance].

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

22 And(AC) they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means Skull Place(AD)).

22 They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place.

23 They offered Him wine, mixed with aromatic spices, but He refused to accept it. [Note: Matt. 27:34 calls this "gall," a bitter drug for the purpose of dulling the pain of crucifixion].

23 They tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.

23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

23 They tried to give Him wine(AE) mixed with myrrh,(AF) but He did not take it.

23 They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he wouldn't accept it.

24 So, they crucified Him and divided His clothing by gambling for them to decide what each soldier would get.

24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting (g)lots for them to decide (h)what each man should take.

24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

24 Then they crucified Him and divided His clothes, casting lots(AG) for them to decide what each would get.

24 Then they crucified him. They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice to see what each one would get.

25 It was nine o'clock in the morning and they crucified Him. [Note: John 19:14 indicates that the crucifixion took place about noon. This can be harmonized if we take Mark's account to mean when the entire process began].

25 It was the (i)(Q)third hour (j)when they crucified Him.

25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

25 Now it was nine in the morning(c) when they crucified Him.

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

26 The inscription, stating the charge against Him, was attached above His head [i.e., to the upright portion of the cross]. It read, "The king of the Jews."

26 The inscription of the charge against Him (k)read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

26 The inscription of the charge written against Him was:THE KING(AH) OF THE JEWS.(AI)

26 The written notice of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."

27 And they also crucified two thieves with Him, one at His right side and one at His left. {{Some ancient manuscripts add verse

27 They *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

27 They(AJ) crucified two criminals(d)(AK) with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

27 They crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and the other on his left.

28 [(l)And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”]

28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

28 [So the Scripture was fulfilled that says: And He was counted among outlaws.](e)(AL)(f)

28 Those who passed by kept insulting him, shaking their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days

29 And those who passed by the cross shouted abuse at Him and shook their heads [in derision], saying, "Ha, you who said you would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days,

29 Those passing by were (m)hurling abuse at Him, (S)wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

29 Those(AM) who passed by were yelling insults(AN) at(g) Him, shaking their heads,(AO) and saying, “Ha! The One who would demolish the sanctuary and build it in three days,(AP)

30 save yourself [from dying] and come down from the cross."

30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!”(AQ)

30 In the same way, the high priests, along with the scribes, were also making fun of him among themselves. They kept saying, "He saved others, but can't save himself!

31 In the same way, the leading priests also mocked Him among themselves, along with the experts in the law of Moses, saying, "He saved other people, now he cannot even save himself.

31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “(U)He saved others; (n)He cannot save Himself.

31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.

31 In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes(AR) were mocking Him to one another and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself!

31 Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, since seeing is believing!" Even the men who were crucified with him kept insulting him.

32 This 'Christ, the king of Israel,' let him now come down from the cross so we can see it and believe in him." And the thieves who were being crucified with Him also spoke abusively to Him.

32 Let this Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

32 Let the Messiah,(AS) the King(AT) of Israel,(AU) come down now from the cross,(AV) so that we may see and believe.”(AW) Even those who were crucified with Him were taunting Him.

32 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

Jesus Dies On The Cross

33 And when it became noon there was darkness over the entire land until three o'clock in the afternoon.

33 (X)When the (o)(Y)sixth hour came, darkness (p)fell over the whole land until the (q)(Z)ninth hour.

33 When(AX) it was noon,(h) darkness came over the whole land(i) until three in the afternoon.(j)(AY)

33 At three o'clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?")

34 Then at three o'clock Jesus shouted in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama, sabachthani?" [Note: These words were in the commonly spoken Aramaic language], which being interpreted, means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

34 At the (AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (AB)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

34 When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, "Listen! He's calling for Elijah!"

35 And when some of those standing there heard this, they said, "Look, he is calling for Elijah."

35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.”

35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

35 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “Look, He’s calling for Elijah!”

35 So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink, saying, "Wait! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down!"

36 Then one of the soldiers ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a stick and gave it to Him to drink, saying, "Let him alone; let us see if Elijah comes to take him down [from the cross]."

36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “(r)Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.”

36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

36 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

37 Then Jesus spoke in a loud voice and gave up His spirit [to God. See Luke 23:46].

37 (AC)And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last.

37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

37 But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed His last.

37 The curtain in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.

38 When the centurion who stood facing Jesus saw how he had cried out and breathed his last, he said, "This man certainly was the Son of God!"

39 And when the military officer in charge of one hundred men, who was standing in front of Jesus, saw Him die like that, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God."

39 (AE)When the centurion, who was standing (s)right in front of Him, saw (t)the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was (u)the Son of God!”

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He(o) breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!”(p)(BC)

39 Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome.

40 And there were also some women watching all this from a distance. Among them were Mary from Magdala; Mary the mother of the younger James and [his brother] Joseph [i.e., probably the wife of Clopas. See John 19:25]; and Salome [i.e., the mother of James and John and wife of Zebedee. See Matt. 27:56].

40 (AF)There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of (v)James (AG)the (w)Less and Joses, and (AH)Salome.

40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

40 There(BD) were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,(BE) Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.

40 They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.

41 These women had ministered to Jesus' needs when they followed Him from Galilee. Others watching were many women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.

41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and (x)(AI)minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

41 When He was in Galilee,(BF) they would follow Him and help Him. Many other women had come up with Him to Jerusalem.(BG)

41 It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening,

42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

42 When(BH) it was already evening, because it was preparation day (that is, the day before the Sabbath),

42 Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council, who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

43 Joseph, from Arimathea, a highly respected member of the [Jewish] Council, who was expecting the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate [i.e., the Roman appointed governor] and asked [him] for the body of Jesus.

43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent member of the Council, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward(BI) to the kingdom of God,(BJ) came and boldly went in to Pilate(BK) and asked for Jesus’ body.(BL)

43 Pilate was amazed to hear that Jesus had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead.

44 Pilate was amazed that Jesus had already died, and calling the military officer to him, asked how long He had been dead.

44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

44 Pilate was surprised that He was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him whether He had already died.

44 When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse.

45 And when he found out from the military officer, he granted the body to Joseph.

45 And ascertaining this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

45 When he found out from the centurion, he gave the corpse to Joseph.

45 Joseph bought some linen cloth, took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

46 [Joseph then] brought a linen cloth, and after taking Jesus down from the cross, wrapped the linen cloth around His body and placed it in a grave site that had been cut out of [a ledge of] rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the cave.

46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

46 After he bought some fine linen, he took Him down and wrapped Him in the linen. Then he placed Him in a tomb(BM) cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone(BN) against the entrance to the tomb.

46 Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body had been laid.

47 [Now] Mary from Magdala and Mary the mother of Joseph [See verse 40] saw where the body was laid.

47 (AP)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.

47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

47 Now(BO) Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was placed.
