Israel's Complaint

1 O God! with our own ears, have we heard, Our fathers, have recounted to us, - The work thou didst work, In their day, In the days of aforetime:

1 {To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil.} We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

1 For the choir director. A (a)Maskil of the sons of Korah.O God, we have heard with our ears,Our (A)fathers have told usThe (B)work that You did in their days,In the (C)days of old.

1 For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.God, we have heard with our ears—our ancestors have told us—the work You accomplished in their days,in days long ago:(A)

1 God, we heard it with our ears; our ancestors told us about what you did in their day a long time ago.

2 Thou thyself, with thine own hand - Didst dispossess, nations, and didst plant them, Didst break peoples in pieces, and didst spread them out:

2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

2 You with Your own hand (D)drove out the nations;Then You (E)planted them;You (F)afflicted the peoples,Then You (G)spread them abroad.

2 to plant them,You drove out the nations with Your hand;to settle them,You crushed the peoples.(B)

2 With your hand you expelled the nations and established our ancestors. You afflicted nations and cast them out.

3 For, not by their own sword, gat they possession of the land, Nor did, their own arm, win victory for them, - But thine own right hand, and thine own arm, and the light of thy face, Because thou hadst accepted them.

3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

3 For by their own sword they (H)did not possess the land,And their own arm did not save them,But Your right hand and Your (I)arm and the (J)light of Your presence,For You (K)favored them.

3 For they did not take the land by their sword—their arm did not bring them victory—but by Your right hand, Your arm,and the light of Your face,for You were pleased with them.(C)

3 It was not with their sword that they inherited the land, nor did their own arm deliver them. But it was by your power, your strength, and by the light of your face; because you were pleased with them.

4 Thou thyself, art my king, O God, Command thou the victories of Jacob.

4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

4 You are (L)my King, O God;(M)Command (b)victories for Jacob.

4 You are my King, my God,who ordains(a) victories for Jacob.(D)

4 You are my king, God, command victories for Jacob.

5 By thee, will we thrust at, our adversaries, In thy Name, will we tread down our assailants;

5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

5 Through You we will (N)push back our adversaries;Through Your name we will (O)trample down those who rise up against us.

5 Through You we drive back our foes;through Your name we trample our enemies.(E)

5 Through you we will knock down our oppressors; through your name we will tread down those who rise up against us.

6 For, not in my bow, will I trust, Nor shall, my sword, give me victory;

6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

6 For I will (P)not trust in my bow,Nor will my sword save me.

6 For I do not trust in my bow,and my sword does not bring me victory.(F)

6 For I place no confidence in my bow, nor will my sword deliver me.

7 For thou hast saved us from our adversaries, And, them who hated us, hast thou put to shame.

7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

7 But You (Q)have saved us from our adversaries,And You have (R)put to shame those who hate us.

7 But You give us victory over our foesand let those who hate us be disgraced.(G)

7 For you delivered us from our oppressors and put to shame those who hate us.

8 In God, have we boasted all the day, And, thy Name - unto times age-abiding, will we praise. Selah.

8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

8 In God we have (S)boasted all day long,And we will (T)give thanks to Your name forever. (c)Selah.

8 We boast in God all day long;we will praise Your name forever.(H)Selah

8 We will praise God all day long; and to your name we will give thanks forever. Interlude

9 But nay thou hast rejected, and confounded us, And wilt not go forth with our hosts;

9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

9 Yet You (U)have rejected us and brought us to (V)dishonor,And (W)do not go out with our armies.

9 But You have rejected and humiliated us;You do not march out with our armies.(I)

9 However, you cast us off and made us ashamed! You did not even march with our armies!

10 Thou sufferest us to turn back from the adversary, And, they who hate us, have plundered at will:

10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

10 You cause us to (X)turn back from the adversary;And those who hate us (Y)have taken spoil for themselves.

10 You make us retreat from the foe,and those who hate ushave taken plunder for themselves.(J)

10 You made us retreat from our oppressors. Our enemies ransacked us.

11 Thou dost give us up like sheep to be devoured, And, amongst the nations, hast thou scattered us.

11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

11 You give us as (Z)sheep (d)to be eatenAnd have (AA)scattered us among the nations.

11 You hand us over to be eaten like sheepand scatter us among the nations.(K)

11 You handed us over to be slaughtered like sheep and you scattered us among the nations.

12 Thou dost sell thy people for, no-value, And hast not made increase by their price.

12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

12 You (AB)sell Your people (e)cheaply,And have not (f)profited by their sale.

12 You sell Your people for nothing;You make no profit from selling them.(L)

12 You sold out your people for nothing, and made no profit at that price.

13 Thou dust make us, A reproach to our neighbours, A mockery and a derision to them who are round about us:

13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

13 You make us a (AC)reproach to our neighbors,A scoffing and a (AD)derision to those around us.

13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors,a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.(M)

13 You made us a laughing stock to our neighbors, a source of mockery and derision to those around us.

14 Thou dust make us, A by-word among the nations, - A shaking of the head among the peoples.

14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

14 You make us (AE)a byword among the nations,A (g)(AF)laughingstock among the peoples.

14 You make us a joke among the nations,a laughingstock(b) among the peoples.(N)

14 You made us an object lesson among the nations; people shake their heads at us.

15 All the day, is my confusion before me, And, the shame of my face, hath covered me:

15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

15 All day long my dishonor is before meAnd (h)my (AG)humiliation has overwhelmed me,

15 My disgrace is before me all day long,and shame has covered my face,(O)

15 My dishonor tortures me continuously; the shame on my face overwhelms me

16 At the voice of him who reproacheth and revileth, At the face of the foe and avenger.

16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

16 Because of the voice of him who (AH)reproaches and reviles,Because of the presence of the (AI)enemy and the avenger.

16 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler,because of the enemy and avenger.(P)

16 because of the voice of the one who mocks and reviles, because of the enemy and the avenger.

17 All this, hath come upon us, Yet had we not forgotten thee, Neither had we dealt falsely with thy covenant;

17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

17 All this has come upon us, but we have (AJ)not forgotten You,And we have not (AK)dealt falsely with Your covenant.

17 All this has happened to us,but we have not forgotten Youor betrayed Your covenant.(Q)

17 All this came upon us, yet we did not forsake you, and we have not dealt falsely with your covenant;

18 Our heart had not drawn back, Nor had our goings swerved from thy path;

18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

18 Our heart has not (AL)turned back,And our steps (AM)have not deviated from Your way,

18 Our hearts have not turned back;our steps have not strayed from Your path.(R)

18 Our hearts have not turned away; our steps have not swerved from your path.

19 That thou shouldst have crushed us down in the place of wild dogs, And covered us over with a deadly shadow.

19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

19 Yet You have (AN)crushed us in a place of (AO)jackalsAnd covered us with (AP)the shadow of death.

19 But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackalsand have covered us with deepest darkness.(S)

19 Nevertheless, you crushed us in the lair of jackals, and covered us in deep darkness.

20 If we had forgotten the Name of our God, And had spread forth our hands unto the GOD of the foreigner,

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

20 If we had (AQ)forgotten the name of our GodOr extended our (i)hands to (AR)a strange god,

20 If we had forgotten the name of our Godand spread out our hands to a foreign god,(T)

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or lifted our hands to a foreign god,

21 Would not, God, have searched into this, Seeing that, he, knoweth the secrets of the heart?

21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

21 Would not God (AS)find this out?For He knows the secrets of the heart.

21 wouldn’t God have found this out,since He knows the secrets of the heart?(U)

21 wouldn't God find out since he knows the secrets of the heart?

22 Surely, for thy sake, have we been slain all the day, We have been accounted as sheep for slaughter.

22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

22 But (AT)for Your sake we are killed all day long;We are considered as (AU)sheep to be slaughtered.

22 Because of You we are slain all day long;we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.(V)

22 For your sake we are being killed all day long. We are thought of as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake thou! wherefore shouldst thou sleep, O Lord? Bestir thee! do not reject us altogether!

23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

23 (AV)Arouse Yourself, why (AW)do You sleep, O Lord?Awake, (AX)do not reject us forever.

23 Wake up, Lord! Why are You sleeping?Get up! Don’t reject us forever!(W)

23 Wake up! Why are you asleep, Lord? Get up! Don't cast us off forever!

24 Wherefore shouldst thou hide, thy face? Shouldst forget our humiliation and our oppression?

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

24 Why do You (AY)hide Your faceAnd (AZ)forget our affliction and our oppression?

24 Why do You hide Yourselfand forget our affliction and oppression?(X)

24 Why are you hiding your face? Why are you ignoring our affliction and oppression?

25 For our soul, sinketh down to the dust, Our body, cleaveth to the earth.

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

25 For our (BA)soul has sunk down into the dust;Our body cleaves to the earth.

25 For we have sunk down to the dust;our bodies cling to the ground.(Y)

25 For we have collapsed in the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

26 Arise to our help, And ransom us, because of thine own lovingkindness.

26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

26 (BB)Rise up, be our help,And (BC)redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.

26 Rise up! Help us!Redeem us because of Your faithful love.(Z)
