A friend or foster-brother (2Ma 9:29) of Antiochus Epiphanes, who received the charge (previously given to Lysias) of bringing up the young Antiochus Eupator (1Ma 6:14). On the death of Antiochus Epiphanes, Lysias took upon himself to proclaim young Eupator king (b.c. 164). The jealousy over this matter led to open hostilitles between Lysias and Philip. In his lowly condition his justice was taken away. And who will describe his generation, because his life was taken from the earth? And having answered, the eunuch said to Philip, I ask thee, about whom does the prophet say this, about himself, or about some other man? And Philip having opened his mouth, and having begun from this Scripture, he preached the good-news to him--the man Jesus. And as they went on the way, they came to some water, and the eunuch says, Look, water! What prevents me to be immersed? [This verse in not in the majority of the manuscripts.] And he commanded the chariot to stand still. And they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he immersed him. And when they came up out of the water, Spirit of Lord caught away Philip, and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through all the cities he preached the good-news until he came to Caesarea.
And on the morrow, after going forth, those around Paul came to Caesarea. And having entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, being of the seven, we dwelt with him. Now four virgin daughters who prophesied were with this man.
