All the descendants of Jacob were seventy people; Joseph was [already] in Egypt.

Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation,

Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph [nor the history of his accomplishments].

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had solemnly ordered (placed under an oath) the Israelites, saying, “God will assuredly take care of you, and you must carry my bones away from here with you.”
