and learning that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction he turned him over to Herod, for Herod was in Jerusalem at that time.

But Prince Herod, being rebuked by John respecting Herodias, the wife of Herod's brother, and for all the evil things that he had done,

and Joanna the wife of Chuzas Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered unto them of their substance.

At that time, certain Pharisees came to him and said, Go away from this place, because Herod's purpose is to put you to death.

Now the women who told these things to the apostles were Mary from Magdala; Joanna [Note: This was the wife of Chuzas, Herod's property manager. See Luke 8:3], and other women who were with them.

Herod said, "I had John beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?" So Herod wanted to learn about Jesus.

Now it was the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar. And He said to them, "Go and tell that fox [Note: This is a metaphor signifying the sly, cunning nature of King Herod], 'Look, I am driving out evil spirits and performing [miraculous] healings today and tomorrow, but on the third day I will be finished.'

So Herod questioned him at considerable length; Jesus gave him no answer.

And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was ill of a fever, and they besought him for her.
