This aroused bitter indignation among the high priest and his followers who were of the sect of the Sadducees,

who belonged to the suite of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. He summoned Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God.

"The Lord's hand is now upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a season." Instantly there fell on him a mist and a darkness, and groping about, he sought some one to lead him by the hand.

But the Jews, moved with jealousy, called to their aid certain ill-favored and idle fellows, formed a mob, and began to set the town in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.

"They know me of old, if they are willing to testify, how that according to the strict sect of our religion, I lived a Pharisee.

"But we are eager to hear from you what it is that you believe; for we all know that as for this sect it is everywhere spoken against."
