Thematic Bible: Insufficient to secure salvation

Thematic Bible

For by grace are ye made safe through faith, and that, not of yourselves: For it is the gift of God, and cometh not of works, lest any man should boast himself.

And wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith: but as it were, by the works of the law. For they have stumbled at the stumbling stone.

Many will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not in thy name prophesied? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name have done many miracles?' And then will I knowledge unto them, that I never knew them: 'Depart from me, ye workers of iniquity.'

If it be of grace, then is it not of works. For then were grace no more grace. If it be by the deserving of works, then is it no more grace. For then were deserving no longer deserving.

But after that the kindness and love of our saviour God to man ward appeared, not of the deeds of righteousness which we wrought, but of his mercy, he saved us, by the fountain of the new birth, and with the renewing of the holy ghost,

which was a similitude for the time then present, and in which were offered gifts and sacrifices that could not make them that minister perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

Sacrifice and meat-offering thou wouldest not, but mine ears hast thou opened. Burnt-offerings and sacrifice for sin hast thou not required.

For if thou hadst pleasure in sacrifice, I would give it thee: but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, shalt thou not despise.

Why offer ye so many sacrifices unto me, sayeth the LORD? I am full of the burnt offerings of weathers, and with the fatness of fed beasts. I have no pleasure in the blood of bullocks, lambs, and goats.

Wherefore if ye had wist, what this saying meaneth, 'I require mercy and not sacrifice,' ye would never have condemned innocents.
