"Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and the scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, and turn Him over to the heathen to mock and flog and crucify, but on the third day He will rise again."

But He answered, "Only a wicked and treacherous age is hankering for a spectacular sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the whale's stomach for three days and nights, the Son of Man will be three days and nights in the heart of the earth.

He answered, "The man who has just dipped his hand with me in the dish is the man who is going to betray me. The Son of Man is going away as the Scriptures say of Him, but a curse will be on that man by whom He is betrayed. It would have been better for that man, if he had never been born!"

As they were walking along the road up to Jerusalem, Jesus was going on ahead of them, but they were dazed while those who were still following were afraid. Then again He took the Twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to befall Him. "Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be turned over to the high priests and scribes, and they will sentence Him to death, and will turn Him over to the heathen, and they will make sport of Him, and spit on Him, and flog Him, and kill Him, but three days after He will rise again."

Then He said to them all, "If anyone chooses to be my disciple, he must say 'No' to self, put the cross on his shoulders daily, and continue to follow me. For whoever chooses to save his lower life will lose his higher life, but whoever gives up his lower life for my sake will save his higher life.

For He will be turned over to the heathen and sport made of Him, He will be insulted and spit upon, and then they will flog Him and kill Him, but on the third day He will rise again."

After saying this Jesus was deeply moved in spirit and solemnly said, "I most solemnly say to you, one of you is going to betray me." The disciples kept looking at one another, but were at a loss to know which one He meant. One of the disciples, whom Jesus specially loved, was sitting very close to Jesus at His right. So Simon Peter nodded to him to ask Him which one it was that He meant. He leaned back on Jesus' breast and said to Him, "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered, "It is that one to whom I give the piece of bread when I dip it in the dish." So He dipped it into the dish and took it and gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son. As soon as he took the bread, Satan took possession of Judas. Then Jesus said to him, "Make quick work of what you are to do."

Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "I am going where you cannot follow me just now, but you will later follow me." Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow you right now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus answered, "You will lay down your life for me! I most solemnly say to you, before a cock crows, you will three times disown me!"
