'Lord' in the Bible

Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.

Thus says the Lord,“What injustice did your fathers find in Me,That they went far from MeAnd walked after emptiness and became empty?

“They did not say, ‘Where is the LordWho brought us up out of the land of Egypt,Who led us through the wilderness,Through a land of deserts and of pits,Through a land of drought and of deep darkness,Through a land that no one crossedAnd where no man dwelt?’

“The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’And those who handle the law did not know Me;The rulers also transgressed against Me,And the prophets prophesied by BaalAnd walked after things that did not profit.

“Therefore I will yet contend with you,” declares the Lord,“And with your sons’ sons I will contend.

“Be appalled, O heavens, at this,And shudder, be very desolate,” declares the Lord.

“Have you not done this to yourselfBy your forsaking the Lord your GodWhen He led you in the way?

“Your own wickedness will correct you,And your apostasies will reprove you;Know therefore and see that it is evil and bitterFor you to forsake the Lord your God,And the dread of Me is not in you,” declares the Lord God of hosts.

“Why do you contend with Me?You have all transgressed against Me,” declares the Lord.

“O generation, heed the word of the Lord.Have I been a wilderness to Israel,Or a land of thick darkness?Why do My people say, ‘We are free to roam;We will no longer come to You’?

“From this place also you will go outWith your hands on your head;For the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust,And you will not prosper with them.”

God says, “If a husband divorces his wifeAnd she goes from himAnd belongs to another man,Will he still return to her?Will not that land be completely polluted?But you are a harlot with many lovers;Yet you turn to Me,” declares the Lord.

Then the Lord said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “Have you seen what faithless Israel did? She went up on every high hill and under every green tree, and she was a harlot there.

Yet in spite of all this her treacherous sister Judah did not return to Me with all her heart, but rather in deception,” declares the Lord.

And the Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel has proved herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.

Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say,‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord;‘I will not look upon you in anger.For I am gracious,’ declares the Lord;‘I will not be angry forever.

‘Only acknowledge your iniquity,That you have transgressed against the Lord your GodAnd have scattered your favors to the strangers under every green tree,And you have not obeyed My voice,’ declares the Lord.

‘Return, O faithless sons,’ declares the Lord;‘For I am a master to you,And I will take you one from a city and two from a family,And I will bring you to Zion.’

It shall be in those days when you are multiplied and increased in the land,” declares the Lord, “they will no longer say, ‘The ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ And it will not come to mind, nor will they remember it, nor will they miss it, nor will it be made again.

At that time they will call Jerusalem ‘The Throne of the Lord,’ and all the nations will be gathered to it, to Jerusalem, for the name of the Lord; nor will they walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart.

“Surely, as a woman treacherously departs from her lover,So you have dealt treacherously with Me,O house of Israel,” declares the Lord.

A voice is heard on the bare heights,The weeping and the supplications of the sons of Israel;Because they have perverted their way,They have forgotten the Lord their God.

“Surely, the hills are a deception,A tumult on the mountains.Surely in the Lord our GodIs the salvation of Israel.

Let us lie down in our shame, and let our humiliation cover us; for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.”

“If you will return, O Israel,” declares the Lord,“Then you should return to Me.And if you will put away your detested things from My presence,And will not waver,

And you will swear, ‘As the Lord lives,’In truth, in justice and in righteousness;Then the nations will bless themselves in Him,And in Him they will glory.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem,“Break up your fallow ground,And do not sow among thorns.

“Circumcise yourselves to the LordAnd remove the foreskins of your heart,Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,Or else My wrath will go forth like fireAnd burn with none to quench it,Because of the evil of your deeds.”

“For this, put on sackcloth,Lament and wail;For the fierce anger of the LordHas not turned back from us.”

“It shall come about in that day,” declares the Lord, “that the heart of the king and the heart of the princes will fail; and the priests will be appalled and the prophets will be astounded.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Surely You have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You will have peace’; whereas a sword touches the throat.”

‘Like watchmen of a field they are against her round about,Because she has rebelled against Me,’ declares the Lord.

I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was a wilderness,And all its cities were pulled downBefore the Lord, before His fierce anger.

For thus says the Lord,“The whole land shall be a desolation,Yet I will not execute a complete destruction.

“And although they say, ‘As the Lord lives,’Surely they swear falsely.”

O Lord, do not Your eyes look for truth?You have smitten them,But they did not weaken;You have consumed them,But they refused to take correction.They have made their faces harder than rock;They have refused to repent.

Then I said, “They are only the poor,They are foolish;For they do not know the way of the LordOr the ordinance of their God.

“I will go to the greatAnd will speak to them,For they know the way of the LordAnd the ordinance of their God.”But they too, with one accord, have broken the yokeAnd burst the bonds.

“Shall I not punish these people,” declares the Lord,“And on a nation such as thisShall I not avenge Myself?

“For the house of Israel and the house of JudahHave dealt very treacherously with Me,” declares the Lord.

They have lied about the LordAnd said, “Not He;Misfortune will not come on us,And we will not see sword or famine.

Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts,“Because you have spoken this word,Behold, I am making My words in your mouth fireAnd this people wood, and it will consume them.

“Behold, I am bringing a nation against you from afar, O house of Israel,” declares the Lord.“It is an enduring nation,It is an ancient nation,A nation whose language you do not know,Nor can you understand what they say.

“Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not make you a complete destruction.

It shall come about when they say, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ then you shall say to them, ‘As you have forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

‘Do you not fear Me?’ declares the Lord.‘Do you not tremble in My presence?For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea,An eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it.Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail;Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it.

‘They do not say in their heart,“Let us now fear the Lord our God,Who gives rain in its season,Both the autumn rain and the spring rain,Who keeps for usThe appointed weeks of the harvest.”

‘Shall I not punish these people?’ declares the Lord,‘On a nation such as thisShall I not avenge Myself?’

For thus says the Lord of hosts,“Cut down her treesAnd cast up a siege against Jerusalem.This is the city to be punished,In whose midst there is only oppression.

Thus says the Lord of hosts,“They will thoroughly glean as the vine the remnant of Israel;Pass your hand again like a grape gathererOver the branches.”

To whom shall I speak and give warningThat they may hear?Behold, their ears are closedAnd they cannot listen.Behold, the word of the Lord has become a reproach to them;They have no delight in it.

But I am full of the wrath of the Lord;I am weary with holding it in.“Pour it out on the children in the streetAnd on the gathering of young men together;For both husband and wife shall be taken,The aged and the very old.

“Their houses shall be turned over to others,Their fields and their wives together;For I will stretch out My handAgainst the inhabitants of the land,” declares the Lord.

“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done?They were not even ashamed at all;They did not even know how to blush.Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time that I punish them,They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.

Thus says the Lord,“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths,Where the good way is, and walk in it;And you will find rest for your souls.But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Therefore, thus says the Lord,“Behold, I am laying stumbling blocks before this people.And they will stumble against them,Fathers and sons together;Neighbor and friend will perish.”

Thus says the Lord,“Behold, a people is coming from the north land,And a great nation will be aroused from the remote parts of the earth.

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house and proclaim there this word and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship the Lord!’”

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.

Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your sight? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” declares the Lord.

And now, because you have done all these things,” declares the Lord, “and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you but you did not answer,

Do they spite Me?” declares the Lord. “Is it not themselves they spite, to their own shame?”

Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, My anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat flesh.

You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction; truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.

‘Cut off your hair and cast it away,And take up a lamentation on the bare heights;For the Lord has rejected and forsakenThe generation of His wrath.’

For the sons of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight,” declares the Lord, “they have set their detestable things in the house which is called by My name, to defile it.

“Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place.

“At that time,” declares the Lord, “they will bring out the bones of the kings of Judah and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem from their graves.

And death will be chosen rather than life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family, that remains in all the places to which I have driven them,” declares the Lord of hosts.

“You shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord,“Do men fall and not get up again?Does one turn away and not repent?

“Even the stork in the skyKnows her seasons;And the turtledove and the swift and the thrushObserve the time of their migration;But My people do not knowThe ordinance of the Lord.

“How can you say, ‘We are wise,And the law of the Lord is with us’?But behold, the lying pen of the scribesHas made it into a lie.

“The wise men are put to shame,They are dismayed and caught;Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,And what kind of wisdom do they have?

“Were they ashamed because of the abomination they had done?They certainly were not ashamed,And they did not know how to blush;Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;At the time of their punishment they shall be brought down,”Says the Lord.

“I will surely snatch them away,” declares the Lord;“There will be no grapes on the vineAnd no figs on the fig tree,And the leaf will wither;And what I have given them will pass away.”’”

Why are we sitting still?Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified citiesAnd let us perish there,Because the Lord our God has doomed usAnd given us poisoned water to drink,For we have sinned against the Lord.

“For behold, I am sending serpents against you,Adders, for which there is no charm,And they will bite you,” declares the Lord.

Behold, listen! The cry of the daughter of my people from a distant land:“Is the Lord not in Zion? Is her King not within her?”“Why have they provoked Me with their graven images, with foreign idols?”

“They bend their tongue like their bow;Lies and not truth prevail in the land;For they proceed from evil to evil,And they do not know Me,” declares the Lord.

“Your dwelling is in the midst of deceit;Through deceit they refuse to know Me,” declares the Lord.

Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts,“Behold, I will refine them and assay them;For what else can I do, because of the daughter of My people?

“Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares the Lord.“On a nation such as thisShall I not avenge Myself?

Who is the wise man that may understand this? And who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord has spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land ruined, laid waste like a desert, so that no one passes through?

The Lord said, “Because they have forsaken My law which I set before them, and have not obeyed My voice nor walked according to it,

therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “behold, I will feed them, this people, with wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.

Thus says the Lord of hosts,“Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come;And send for the wailing women, that they may come!

Now hear the word of the Lord, O you women,And let your ear receive the word of His mouth;Teach your daughters wailing,And everyone her neighbor a dirge.

Speak, “Thus says the Lord,‘The corpses of men will fall like dung on the open field,And like the sheaf after the reaper,But no one will gather them.’”

Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches;

but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the Lord.

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “that I will punish all who are circumcised and yet uncircumcised—

Hear the word which the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel.

Thus says the Lord,“Do not learn the way of the nations,And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavensAlthough the nations are terrified by them;
