'Speech' in the Bible
Lamech said to his wives,“Adah and Zillah,Listen to my voice,You wives of Lamech,Give heed to my speech,For I have killed a man for wounding me;And a boy for striking me;
Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
But Moses spoke before the Lord, saying, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am unskilled in speech?”
But Moses said before the Lord, “Behold, I am unskilled in speech; how then will Pharaoh listen to me?”
“Let my teaching drop as the rain,My speech distill as the dew,As the droplets on the fresh grassAnd as the showers on the herb.
Then one of the young men said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is a skillful musician, a mighty man of valor, a warrior, one prudent in speech, and a handsome man; and the Lord is with him.”
“He deprives the trusted ones of speechAnd takes away the discernment of the elders.
“Listen carefully to my speech,And let my declaration fill your ears.
“Listen carefully to my speech,And let this be your way of consolation.
“Now if it is not so, who can prove me a liar,And make my speech worthless?”
“After my words they did not speak again,And my speech dropped on them.
“However now, Job, please hear my speech,And listen to all my words.
I have called upon You, for You will answer me, O God;Incline Your ear to me, hear my speech.
Day to day pours forth speech,And night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;Their voice is not heard.
His speech was smoother than butter,But his heart was war;His words were softer than oil,Yet they were drawn swords.
Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword.They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
For the lips of an adulteress drip honeyAnd smoother than oil is her speech;
The wise in heart will be called understanding,And sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.
Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool,Much less are lying lips to a prince.
Better is a poor man who walks in his integrityThan he who is perverse in speech and is a fool.
He who loves purity of heartAnd whose speech is gracious, the king is his friend.
Do not let your speech cause you to sin and do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry on account of your voice and destroy the work of your hands?
For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen,Because their speech and their actions are against the Lord,To rebel against His glorious presence.
Then you will be brought low;From the earth you will speak,And from the dust where you are prostrateYour words will come.Your voice will also be like that of a spirit from the ground,And your speech will whisper from the dust.
You will no longer see a fierce people,A people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends,Of a stammering tongue which no one understands.
For you are not being sent to a people of unintelligible speech or difficult language, but to the house of Israel,
nor to many peoples of unintelligible speech or difficult language, whose words you cannot understand. But I have sent you to them who should listen to you;
This figure of speech Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand what those things were which He had been saying to them.
His disciples *said, “Lo, now You are speaking plainly and are not using a figure of speech.
For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.
that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge,
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.
And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.
So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
Therefore having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech,
For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech contemptible.”
But even if I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not so in knowledge; in fact, in every way we have made this evident to you in all things.
But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.
Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
For we never came with flattering speech, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness—
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.
