'Pain' in the Bible

On the third day, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords, went into the unsuspecting city, and killed every male.

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and said, “I gave birth to him in pain.”

Jabez called out to the God of Israel: “If only You would bless me, extend my border, let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not cause any pain.” And God granted his request.

It would still bring me comfort,and I would leap for joy in unrelenting painthat I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

He feels only the pain of his own bodyand mourns only for himself.

A wicked man writhes in pain all his days;only a few years are reserved for the ruthless.

A person may be disciplined on his bed with painand constant distress in his bones,

For my loins are full of burning pain,and there is no health in my body.

For I am about to fall,and my pain is constantly with me.

I was speechless and quiet;I kept silent, even from speaking good,and my pain intensified.

For they persecute the one You struckand talk about the pain of those You wounded.

But as for me—poor and in pain—let Your salvation protect me, God.

“They struck me, but I feel no pain!They beat me, but I didn’t know it!When will I wake up?I’ll look for another drink.” >

Remove sorrow from your heart,and put away pain from your flesh,because youth and the prime of life are fleeting.

They will be horrified;pain and agony will seize them;they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.They will look at each other,their faces flushed with fear.

When the Lord gives you rest from your pain, torment, and the hard labor you were forced to do,

On the day that you plant,you will help them to grow,and in the morningyou will help your seed to sprout,but the harvest will vanishon the day of disease and incurable pain.

Therefore I am filled with anguish.Pain grips me, like the pain of a woman in labor.I am too perplexed to hear,too dismayed to see.

We became pregnant, we writhed in pain;we gave birth to wind.We have won no victories on earth,and the earth’s inhabitants have not fallen.

Look to Abraham your father,and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain.When I called him, he was only one;I blessed him and made him many.

Before Zion was in labor, she gave birth;before she was in pain, she delivered a boy.

My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in agony!Oh, the pain in my heart!My heart pounds;I cannot be silent.For you, my soul,have heard the sound of the ram’s horn—the shout of battle.

Lord, don’t Your eyes look for faithfulness?You have struck them, but they felt no pain.You finished them off,but they refused to accept discipline.They made their faces harder than rock,and they refused to return.

We have heard about it,and we are discouraged.Distress has seized us—pain like a woman in labor.

Why has my pain become unending,my wound incurable,refusing to be healed?You truly have become like a mirage to me—water that is not reliable.

Why do you cry out about your injury?Your pain has no cure!I have done these things to youbecause of your enormous guiltand your innumerable sins.

‘You have said, “Woe is me, because the Lord has added misery to my pain! I am worn out with groaning and have found no rest.”’

The king of Babylon has heard reports about them,and his hands fall helpless.Distress has seized him—pain, like a woman in labor.

ל LamedIs this nothing to you, all you who pass by?Look and see!Is there any pain like mine,which was dealt out to me,which the Lord made me sufferon the day of His burning anger?

צ TsadeThe Lord is just,for I have rebelled against His command.Listen, all you people;look at my pain.My young men and womenhave gone into captivity.

ט TetThose slain by the sword are better offthan those slain by hunger,who waste away, pierced with painbecause the fields lack produce.

Ashkelon will see it and be afraid;Gaza too, and will writhe in great pain,as will Ekron, for her hope will fail.There will cease to be a king in Gaza,and Ashkelon will become uninhabited.

When a woman is in labor she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world.

For if I cause you pain, then who will cheer me other than the one being hurt by me?

I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn’t have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.

If anyone has caused pain, he has caused pain not so much to me but to some degree—not to exaggerate—to all of you.

The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues because of their pain

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.Death will no longer exist;grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer,because the previous things have passed away.
