And a little after, they that stood by came to Peter and said, Verily thou also art one of them, for thy speech discovers thee: then he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, who had said to him, before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

And Peter being in the hall below, there came one of the maid-servants of the high priest; and when she saw Peter as he was warming himself, she looked earnestly upon him and said, Thou also wast with Jesus the Nazarene: but he denied it, saying, I do not know Him, nor do I understand what thou meanest. And the maid seeing him again said to them that stood by, This is one of them: and he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by, said to Peter again, Thou art certainly one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech is like theirs. But he began to curse and swear saying, I do not know this man of whom ye speak: And the cock crowed a second time. Then Peter called to mind the word which Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crow twice thou wilt deny me thrice. And he covered his face and wept.

And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and sat down together, Peter also sat down among them: and a servant-maid seeing him as he sat by the fire, and looking hard at him, said, This fellow was also with Him: But he denied Him, saying, Woman, I do not know Him.read more.
And after a little while another person seeing him said, And thou art one of them: but Peter said, Man, I am not. And about an hour after, another confidently affirmed saying, In truth this fellow also was with Him; for he is a Galilean too: but Peter answered, Man, I know not what thou sayst. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crew. And the Lord turned and looked upon Peter; and Peter called to mind the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, Before the cock crow thou wilt deny me thrice. And Peter went out and wept bitterly.

But Peter stood at the door without: the other disciple therefore, who was known to the high-priest, went out and spake to her that kept the door, and brought Peter in. Then saith the maid, that kept the door, to Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? and he said, I am not. And the servants and officers stood there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and were warming themselves: and Peter was standing with them and warming himself.

And Simon Peter stood warming himself: and they said to him, Art not thou one of his disciples? and he denied it, and said, I am not. Then said one of the servants of the high-priest, kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off, Did not I see thee in the garden with Him? Peter then denied it again, and immediately the cock crew.

And He spake a parable to those that were invited, observing how they chose the chief seats, saying unto them, When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not sit down in the uppermost place, least one more honorable than thou be invited by him; and he who invited thee and him, should come and say to thee, Give place to this person, and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.read more.
But when thou art invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, that, when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then wilt thou have honor before them that sit at table with thee: for whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Wherefore let him, that thinks he standeth, take heed least he fall.

And the portion of scripture, which he was reading, was this, "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before it's shearer is dumb, so He opened not his mouth: in his humiliation his judgement was taken away, and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken away from the earth."

who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be as God. Yet He emptied himself, assuming the form of a servant, when made in the likeness of men: and being in the human state, He humbled himself, and was obedient even unto death, and that the death of the cross.

And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on Him; for they said He spends Himself too much.

The people answered and said, Thou art possessed by a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?

Then said some of the pharisees, This man is not of God, because He doth not keep the sabbath: but others said, How can a wicked man do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

And all the synagogue were filled with rage, when they heard these things, and they rose up and drove Him out of the city, and dragged Him to the brow of the hill, on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down the precipice.

and turning to the woman, He said to Simon, Dost thou see this woman? I came into thine house, and thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she has bathed my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Thou gavest me not the respect of a kiss; but this woman, ever since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. Thou didst not anoint my head with common oil, but she hath anointed even my feet with sweet ointment.

Now the chief priests and all the council sought for evidence against Jesus, to put Him to death, and found none: for many bare false witness against Him, and the evidences did not agree. At last there rose up some and bare false witness against Him,read more.
saying, We heard Him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands: but neither was their evidence consistent. Then the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus saying, Answerest thou nothing? what do these men witness against thee? but he held his peace, and made him no answer. So the high priest asked Him again, and saith to Him, Art thou the Messiah the Son of the blessed God? And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes and said, What farther need have we of witnesses? ye have heard the blasphemy; what think ye? and they all condemned Him as worthy of death. And they spit upon Him, and blind-folded Him, and then buffeted Him and said to Him, prophesy who it was: and the officers struck him with their rods.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the hall, and gathered the whole band about Him: and when they had stript Him, they covered Him with a scarlet robe; and having platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before Him in derision, saying, Hail king of the Jews:read more.
and they spit upon Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And after they had thus abused Him, they took off the scarlet robe from Him, and put on Him his own clothes, and led Him away to be crucified.

Now the chief priests and elders, and the whole council sought false-witness against Jesus, that they might put Him to death: but found none. And tho' many false witnesses came, they found none to their purpose. But at last came two false witnesses and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.read more.
And the high priest stood up and said to Him, Dost thou make no answer? what do these men testify against thee? but Jesus made no reply. Then the high priest said to Him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us, if thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, It is as thou hast said: and I tell you, hereafter ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy, what need have we more of witnesses? now ye have heard his blasphemy, what think ye? and they answered, He ought to be put to death. Then did they spit in his face, and beat Him about the head; and some struck Him with rods, saying, Divine to us, thou Christ, who it is that smote thee.

The high-priest therefore asked Jesus concerning his disciples, and his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world, I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews are continually resorting: and in secret have said nothing. Why dost thou ask me? ask them that heard me, what I have said unto them: for they know what I have said.read more.
And upon his saying these things, one of the officers that stood by struck Jesus, saying, Dost thou answer the high-priest thus? Jesus answered him, If I have ever spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why dost thou strike me? [See verse

Then he released to them Barabbas: but he ordered Jesus to be scourged, and delivered Him to be crucified.

So Pilate being willing to ingratiate with the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus, delivered Him up to be crucified.

And he released to them him that for sedition and murder had been cast into prison, whom they desired; and delivered up Jesus to their will.

Then delivered he Him therefore unto them to be crucified.

And the soldiers led Him away into the hall, which is called the Pretorium; and gathered their whole company together: and they clad Him in purple, and platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and saluted Him, saying, Hail king of the Jews;read more.
and struck Him on the head with a reed, and spit upon Him, and bowed their knees, and did Him homage. And when they had thus abused Him, they took off the purple from Him, and put his own clothes on Him, and brought Him out to crucify Him.

Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and threw a purple robe about Him, and said, "Hail king of the Jews," and struck Him with their hands.

And he asked Him many questions; but He answered him nothing: though the chief priests and scribes stood vehemently accusing Him. But Herod with his soldiers set Him at nought and insulted Him, and put on Him a gaudy robe, and sent Him back to Pilate.

And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, there they crucified Him and the malefactors: one on his right hand and the other on his left. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his garments, and cast lots for them. And the people stood looking on, and even the rulers also with them derided Him, saying, He saved others, let Him save Himself, if He be the Christ the chosen of God.read more.
And the soldiers too insulted Him, coming to Him and offering Him vinegar, saying, If thou art the king of the Jews, save thyself. And there was a superscription written over Him in Greek, and Latin and Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors that were executed with Him reviled Him, saying, If thou be the Messiah, save thyself and us. But the other answered and rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God neither, when thou thyself art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due rewards of our deeds, but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus answered him, I assure thee, thou shalt be with me this day in paradise.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, having been made a curse for us: for it is written, "Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

for I tell you, that this which is written must yet be accomplished in me, "And He was numbered with transgressors," for the things foretold concerning me are near at an end.

And when they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, the place of a skull, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: but when He had tasted it, He would not drink. And after they had fixed Him to the cross, they parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.read more.

And there were two thieves crucified with Him: one on his right hand, and one on the left. and they brought Him to a place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, the place of a scull. And they offered Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He would not take it. And when they had fastened Him to the cross, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what each of them should take.read more.
And it was the third hour, when they fixed Him on the cross: and the title of his charge was written over Him, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And they crucified two thieves with Him, one on his right hand and one on his left: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "And He was numbered with the transgressors." And they that passed by reviled Him, shaking their heads and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest, the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself and come down from the cross. And the chief priests likewise scoffing at Him among themselves, with the scribes, said, He saved others, Himself He cannot save: let Christ, the king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe in Him. And even they that were crucified with Him, reviled Him.

And they took Jesus, and led Him away. And He went out, bearing his cross, into a place called the place of a scull, in Hebrew Golgotha: where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross: and there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.read more.
Many of the Jews therefore read this inscription; for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. And the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not "The king of the Jews," but that "He said, I am king of the Jews." Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. And the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, (and made four parts, to each soldier a part,) and his coat. Now the coat had no seam in it, being woven from the top throughout: they said therefore to one another, Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, "They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots." These things therefore the soldiers did.

And indeed all, that are desirous to live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.

Blessed are ye when men shall revile and persecute you, and utter all manner of reproach against you falsly, for my sake:

Beware of evil men; for they will deliver you up to their councils, and will scourge you in their synagogues. And ye shall be brought before governors and kings on my account, for a testimony to them and to the nations:

Remember what I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have observed my word, they will also observe yours.

for they will excommunicate you: yea, the time is coming, that whosoever killeth you, will think that he offers an acceptable service to God.

and are in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is a demonstration of ruin to them, but to you of salvation, and this from God. For to you it is granted as a favor from Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for his sake: having the same conflict as ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

And ye became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word tho' in much affliction, yet with joy of the holy Ghost.

partly, being made a public spectacle by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, as ye became associates of those who were so treated: for ye sympathized with me in my bonds, and ye took joyfully the plundering of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

for this is an evidence of grace, if any one for conscience towards God endure griefs, suffering unjustly. For what glory is it, if when ye sin and are punished for it, ye bear it patiently? but if when ye do well and suffer for it, ye bear it patiently, this will gain favor with God. For unto this are ye called; because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that ye might follow his steps.

Fear none of the things which thou wilt suffer: behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall suffer affliction ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring in fine clothes, and there come in also a poor man in a mean habit; and ye turn your eyes toward him that weareth the fine clothes, and say to him, Sit thou here in an honorable place; and say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: do ye not make a partial difference within yourselves, and become judges that reason wickedly?

but I say unto you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without cause shall be liable to the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be obnoxious to the council; but whosoever shall say, "Thou fool," shall be in danger of hell-fire.

Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me take the chaff out of thine eye, and behold, there is a beam in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first get the beam out of thine own eye; and then thou wilt see how to take the splinter out of thy brother's eye.

When therefore ye thus assemble together, this is not eating the Lord's supper: for in eating every one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry, and another is glutted. What! have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or do ye despise the church of God, and shame those that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
