So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

If you are left without discipline, in which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had fathers of our flesh to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.'"

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

"And it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'"

It is for discipline that you endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
