⁴ Everyone who practices (exercises) sin also commits lawlessness, because sin is lawlessness. ⁵ You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. ⁶ Whoever abides in him does not sin. Whoever sins has not seen him and does not know him.

He made the one who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf. That way we might become the righteousness of God in him.
