1 Then we turned and set out toward the desert land on the way to the Red Sea just as the Lord told me to do, detouring around Mount Seir for a long time.
1 “(A)Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way to the (a)Red Sea, as the Lord spoke to me, and circled (B)Mount Seir for many days.
1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.
1 “Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea, as the Lord had told me, and we traveled around the hill country of Seir for many days.
1 "We turned and set out for the desert on the road to the Reed Sea, just as the LORD had directed me. We traveled around Mount Seir for many days.
3 "You have circled around this mountain long enough; now turn north.
3 ‘You have circled this mountain long enough. Now turn north,
3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
3 ‘You’ve been traveling around this hill country long enough; turn north.
3 "You've walked around this mountain long enough. Turn northward
4 Instruct these people as follows: 'You are about to cross the border of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who inhabit Seir. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves carefully.
4 (C)and command the people, saying, “You will pass through the (D)territory of your brothers the sons of Esau who live in Seir; and (E)they will be afraid of you. So be very careful;
4 And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:
4 Command the people: You are about to travel through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful.
4 and command this people, "You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives, the descendants of Esau who live around Seir. They will be afraid of you so be very careful.
5 Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount Seir as an inheritance for Esau.
5 do not (b)provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even as little as a (c)footstep (F)because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as a possession.
5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
5 Don’t fight with them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even an inch of it,(a) because I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his possession.
5 Don't fight them, because I won't give you any part of their land, not even the size of a footprint. I have given Mount Seir to Esau as their property.
6 You may purchase food to eat and water to drink from them.
6 You shall buy food from them with money so that you may eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with money so that you may drink.
6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.
6 You may purchase food from them with silver, so that you may eat, and buy water from them to drink.(A)
6 You may buy food to eat and water to drink from them, paying with cash."'
7 All along the way I, the Lord your God, have blessed your every effort. I have been attentive to your travels through this great wasteland. These forty years I have been with you; you have lacked for nothing.'"
7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in all (d)that you have done; He has known your (e)wanderings through this (G)great wilderness. These (H)forty years the Lord your God has been with you; you have not lacked a thing.”’
7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
7 For the Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands.(B) He has watched over your journey through this immense wilderness. The Lord your God has been with you this past 40 years, and you have lacked nothing.’
7 Indeed, the LORD your God blessed all the works of your hands. He knows about your travels through this vast desert. The LORD your God was with you these past 40 years, so that you didn't lack anything.
8 So we turned away from our relatives the descendants of Esau, the inhabitants of Seir, turning from the desert route, from Elat and Ezion Geber, and traveling the way of the Moab wastelands.
8 “So we passed beyond our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Seir, away from the (I)Arabah road, away from Elath and (J)from Ezion-geber. And we turned and passed through by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Eziongaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.
8 “So we bypassed our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road and from Elath and Ezion-geber. We traveled along the road to the Wilderness of Moab.
8 So we bypassed our relatives, the descendants of Esau who live in Seir. We turned through the Arabah desert from Elath, and from Ezion-geber we traveled the desert road to Moab."
9 Then the Lord said to me, "Do not harass Moab and provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land as your territory. This is because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.
9 Then the Lord said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of (f)their land as a possession, because I have given (K)Ar to (L)the sons of Lot as a possession.’
9 And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
9 The Lord said to me, ‘Show no hostility toward Moab, and do not provoke them to battle, for I will not give you any of their land as a possession, since I have given Ar as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’”(C)
9 "Then the LORD told me, "Don't harass Moab or provoke them to war, because I won't give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their property.
10 (The Emites used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites.
10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;
10 The Emim, a great and numerous people as tall as the Anakim, had previously lived there.
10 (The Emites, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, lived there before.
12 Previously the Horites lived in Seir but the descendants of Esau dispossessed and destroyed them and settled in their place, just as Israel did to the land it came to possess, the land the Lord gave them.)
12 (O)The Horites formerly lived in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them from before them and settled in their place, (P)just as Israel did to the land of (g)their possession which the Lord gave to them.)
12 The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.
12 The Horites had previously lived in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out, destroying them completely(b) and settling in their place, just as Israel did in the land of its possession the Lord gave them.
12 The Horites used to live in Seir before the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, exterminated them, and settled there instead, just as Israel will do in the land of its possession, which the LORD gave them.)
14 Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the Lord had vowed to them.
14 Now the (j)time that it took for us to come from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the (k)brook Zered was (Q)thirty-eight years, until (R)all the generation of the men of war perished from within the camp, as (S)the Lord had sworn to them.
14 And the space in which we came from Kadeshbarnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.
14 The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley was 38 years until the entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.
14 Now from the time we left Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered was 38 years. All of that generation, the soldiers in the camp, were destroyed just as the LORD swore they would be.
15 Indeed, it was the very hand of the Lord that eliminated them from within the camp until they were all gone.
15 (T)Moreover the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from within the camp until they all perished.
15 For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.
15 Indeed, the Lord’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp until they had all perished.
15 Indeed, the hand of the LORD was against them to root them out from the camp until they were utterly destroyed."
19 But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonites' land as your possession; I have already given it to Lot's descendants as their possession.
19 When you come opposite the (W)sons of Ammon, do not harass them nor provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to (X)the sons of Lot as a possession.’
19 And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
19 When you get close to the Ammonites, don’t show any hostility to them or fight with them, for I will not give you any of the Ammonites’ land as a possession; I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.’”(G)
19 When you come to the Ammonites, don't harass or provoke them to war, for I won't give any part of Ammonite land to you, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their property.
20 (That also is considered to be a land of the Rephaites. The Rephaites lived there originally; the Ammonites call them Zamzummites.
20 (It is also regarded as the land of the (Y)Rephaim, for Rephaim formerly lived in it, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummin,
20 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;
20 This too used to be regarded as the land of the Rephaim. The Rephaim lived there previously, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummim,
20 ""(Indeed, it was considered Rephaim territory, since the Rephaim used to lived there. The Ammonites called them Zamzummites,
21 They are a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites. But the Lord destroyed the Rephaites in advance of the Ammonites, so they dispossessed them and settled down in their place.
21 a people as great, numerous, and tall as the Anakim, but the Lord destroyed them before them. And they dispossessed them and settled in their place,
21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:
21 a great and numerous people, tall as the Anakim. The Lord destroyed the Rephaim at the advance of the Ammonites, so that they drove them out and settled in their place.
21 a great people, numerous, and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed the Rephaim, so that the Ammonites dispossessed them and settled there instead.
22 This is exactly what he did for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir when he destroyed the Horites before them so that they could dispossess them and settle in their area to this very day.
22 just as He did for the sons of Esau, who (Z)live in Seir, when He destroyed (AA)the Horites from before them; they dispossessed them and settled in their place even to this day.
22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:
22 This was just as He had done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites before them; they drove them out and have lived in their place until now.
22 This is what he did for the descendants of Esau who live in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites before them. So they dispossessed them and settled there in their place, where they live to this day.
23 As for the Avvites who lived in settlements as far west as Gaza, Caphtorites who came from Crete destroyed them and settled down in their place.)
23 And the (AB)Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the (l)(AC)Caphtorim who came from (m)(AD)Caphtor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)
23 And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)
23 The Caphtorim, who came from Caphtor,(c) destroyed the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, and settled in their place.
23 It was the same for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza. The Caphtorites, who came from Crete, destroyed them and settled there in their place.)
24 Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look! I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Go ahead! Take it! Engage him in war!
24 ‘Arise, set out, and pass through the (n)(AE)valley of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession and contend with him in battle.
24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.
24 “The Lord also said, ‘Get up, move out, and cross the Arnon Valley. See, I have handed Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land over to you. Begin to take possession of it; engage him in battle.
24 Get ready and set out for the Wadi Arnon. Look! I've given into your control Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, along with his land. Prepare to take possession by provoking him to war.
25 This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach."
25 This day I will begin to put (AF)the dread and fear of you (o)upon the peoples (p)everywhere under the heavens, who, when they hear the report of you, (AG)will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’
25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.
25 Today I will begin to put the fear and dread of you on the peoples everywhere under heaven. They will hear the report about you, tremble, and be in anguish because of you.’
25 Starting today I will begin to instill fear and terror of you on the part of every nation under heaven who hears reports about you. They'll tremble in anguish before you.'"
26 Then I sent messengers from the Kedemoth Desert to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace:
26 “(AH)So I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
26 “So I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon from the Wilderness of Kedemoth, saying,
26 "I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to King Sihon of Heshbon with this message of peace:
27 "Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway. I will not turn aside to the right or the left.
27 ‘Let me pass through your land, I will (q)travel only on the highway; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left.
27 Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.
27 ‘Let us travel through your land; we will keep strictly to the highway. We will not turn to the right or the left.(H)
27 "Let me pass through your territory. I'll stay on the main road. I won't turn to the right or left.
28 Sell me food for cash so that I can eat and sell me water to drink. Just allow me to go through on foot,
28 You will sell me food for money so that I may eat, and give me water for money so that I may drink, (AI)only let me pass through on (r)foot,
28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;
28 You can sell us food in exchange for silver so we may eat, and give us water for silver so we may drink. Only let us travel through on foot,
28 Sell me food for cash, so I can eat and give me water for cash, so I can drink. Just let me pass through on foot,
29 just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the Lord our God is giving us."
29 just as the sons of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in (AJ)Ar did for me, until I cross over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God is giving to us.’
29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.
29 just as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir did for us, and the Moabites who live in Ar, until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.’
29 as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir did for me, as did the Moabites who live in Ar. I'll pass through, until I will have crossed the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is about to give us.'
30 But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the Lord our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day.
30 But (AK)Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing for us to pass (s)through his land; for the (AL)Lord your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to deliver him into your hand, as he is today.
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us travel through his land, for the Lord your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to hand him over to you, as has now taken place.
30 But King Sihon of Heshbon did not allow us to pass through, because the LORD your God had hardened his spirit and made him arrogant, in order to deliver him into your control today.
31 The Lord said to me, "Look! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession."
31 The Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land (t)over to you. Begin to (u)occupy, that you may possess his land.’
31 And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
31 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land to you. Begin to take possession of it.’
31 "Then the LORD told me, "See, I've begun to deliver Sihon and his territory over to you. Prepare to take possession of his land.'
32 When Sihon and all his troops emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz,
32 Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.
32 So Sihon and his whole army came out against us for battle at Jahaz.
32 "Sihon came out to meet us, including his entire army, at the battle of Jahaz.
33 the Lord our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons and everyone else.
33 (AM)The Lord our God delivered him (w)over to us, and we (x)(AN)defeated him with his sons and all his people.
33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.
33 The Lord our God handed him over to us, and we defeated him, his sons, and his whole army.
33 The LORD our God delivered him to us, so we attacked him, his son, and his whole army.
34 At that time we seized all his cities and put every one of them under divine judgment, including even the women and children; we left no survivors.
34 So we captured all his cities at that time and (y)(AO)utterly destroyed (z)the men, women and children of every city. We left no survivor.
34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

35 We kept only the livestock and plunder from the cities for ourselves.
35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

35 We only appropriated the livestock for our use, along with plunder from the cities that we captured.
36 From Aroer, which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi), all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist us -- the Lord our God gave them all to us.
36 From (AQ)Aroer which is on the edge of the (aa)valley of Arnon and from the city which is in the (ab)valley, even to Gilead, there was no city that was too high for us; the Lord our God delivered all (ac)over to us.
36 From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
36 There was no city that was inaccessible to(d) us, from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead.(I) The Lord our God gave everything to us.
36 From Aroer on the edge of Arnon Valley and from the town all the way to Gilead, there was no city that was too strong for us the LORD our God delivered them all to us.
37 However, you did not approach the land of the Ammonites, the Wadi Jabbok, the cities of the hill country, or any place else forbidden by the Lord our God.
37 (AR)Only you did not go near to the land of the sons of Ammon, all along the (ad)river (AS)Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and wherever the Lord our God had commanded us.
37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
37 But you did not go near the Ammonites’ land, all along the bank of the Jabbok River,(J) the cities of the hill country, or any place that the Lord our God had forbidden.(K)
37 You did not encroach onto Ammonite land, the banks of the Wadi Jabbok, the towns in the hill country, and all the other places that were forbidden by the LORD our God."
