Hezekiah Consults Isaiah
1 And this happened: When King Hezekiah heard, he tore his garments, covered himself with sackcloth, and entered the temple of Yahweh.
1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

1 When King Hezekiah heard their report,(A) he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth,(B) and went to the Lord’s temple.
1 As soon as Hezekiah the king heard this, he tore his clothes, dressed himself in sackcloth, and went into the LORD's Temple.
2 And he sent Eliakim, who [was] {in charge of} the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and the elders of the priests {covered} with sackcloth to Isaiah son of Amoz, the prophet.
2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

2 Then he sent Eliakim, who was in charge of the palace, Shebna the court secretary, and the leading priests, who were wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.

3 And they said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah: 'This day [is] a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace, for children have come to [the] cervical opening, and there is no strength to give birth.
3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a (E)day of distress, rebuke and rejection; for (F)children have come to birth, and there is no strength to (a)deliver.
3 They said to him, “This is what Hezekiah says: ‘Today is a day of distress, rebuke, and disgrace,(C) for children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.(D)
3 "Here is what Hezekiah says," they told him. "This day is a day of trouble, rebuke, and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no energy to deliver them.
4 Maybe Yahweh your God heard [the] words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria, his master, has sent to taunt [the] living God, and he will rebuke the words that Yahweh your God hears. And you must lift up a prayer for the benefit of the remnant that is found.'"
4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.
4 Perhaps the Lord your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to (G)reproach the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore, offer a prayer for (H)the remnant that is left.’”
4 Perhaps Yahweh your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria sent to mock the living God,(E) and will rebuke him for the words that Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore offer a prayer for the surviving remnant.’”(F)
4 Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, sent to mock the living God, and perhaps he will rebuke the words that the LORD your God has heard. So lift up a prayer for the remnant that still survives in this city."
6 Isaiah said to them, "You must say this to your master: 'Thus says Yahweh: "You must not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, [with] which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
6 Isaiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to your master, ‘Thus says the Lord, “(I)Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.
6 who said to them, “Tell your master this, ‘The Lord says: Don’t be afraid(G) because of the words you have heard, which the king of Assyria’s attendants have blasphemed Me with.(H)
6 "Here is what to tell your master," Isaiah told them. "This is what the LORD says: "Don't be afraid of the words you've heard those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have insulted me.
7 Look! I [am] about to {put} a spirit in him {so that} he shall hear a rumor and he shall return to his land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his land." '"
7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will (J)hear a rumor and (K)return to his own land. And I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.”’”
7 I am about to put a spirit(I) in him and he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”(J)
7 Watch this! I'm going to place an attitude within him, so that when he hears a certain report, he'll return to his own country. Then I'll have him cut down by the sword in his own land."
Sennacherib's Letter
8 And Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that he had left from Lachish.
8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
8 Then Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against (L)Libnah, for he had heard that (b)the king had left (M)Lachish.
8 When the Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish,(K) he returned and found him fighting against Libnah.(L)
8 So the field commander returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, since he had heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish.
9 Now he heard concerning Tirhakah the king of Cush, saying, "He has set out to fight against you." When he heard [it], he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
9 When he (N)heard them say concerning Tirhakah king of (c)(O)Cush, “He has come out to fight against you,” and when he heard it he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
9 The king had heard this about Tirhakah king of Cush:(M) “He has set out to fight against you.” So when he heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
9 Now King Sennacherib had received this report concerning King Tirhakah of Cush: "He has marched out to fight against you."
10 "You shall say this to Hezekiah, king of Judah: '[Do] not let your God in whom you trust in him deceive you by saying, "Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."
10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.
10 “Thus you shall say to Hezekiah king of (d)Judah, ‘(P)Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”
10 “Say this to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Don’t let your God, whom you trust, deceive you(N) by promising that Jerusalem won’t be handed over to the king of Assyria.
10 When he heard it, he returned and sent messengers to Hezekiah: "Say this to Hezekiah king of Judah: "Don't let your God on whom you depend deceive you when he says, "Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria."
11 Look! you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands to destroy them, and you--shall you be delivered?
11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
11 (Q)Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, destroying them completely. So will you be (e)spared?
11 Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: they completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?
11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all countries, dooming them to destruction. So do you think you will be saved?
12 Did the gods of the nations that my {predecessors} destroyed deliver them--Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the sons of Eden who [were] in Telassar?
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?
12 Did the gods of (f)those nations which my fathers have destroyed deliver them, even (R)Gozan and (S)Haran and Rezeph and the sons of Eden who were in Telassar?
12 Did the gods of the nations(O) that my predecessors destroyed rescue them—Gozan,(P) Haran,(Q) Rezeph, and the Edenites in Telassar?
12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my ancestors save them the nations of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden, who were in Tel-assar?
13 Where [is] the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, or Ivvah?'"

Hezekiah's Prayer
14 And Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers, and he read it. Then he went up [to] the temple of Yahweh, and Hezekiah spread it out before the {presence} of Yahweh.
14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
14 Then Hezekiah took the (g)letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the Lord and (h)spread it out before the Lord.

14 Hezekiah received the letters from the messengers, and read them. Then he went up to the LORD's Temple and spread the letters in front of the LORD.
16 "Yahweh of hosts, God of Israel {who is enthroned on} the cherubim, you [are] the one, God by yourself, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you are the one who made the heavens and the earth.
16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
16 “O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, (T)who is enthroned above the cherubim, You are the (U)God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. (V)You have made heaven and earth.
16 Lord of Hosts, God of Israel, who is enthroned above the cherubim,(T) You are God(U)—You alone(V)—of all the kingdoms of the earth.(W) You made the heavens and the earth.(X)
16 "O LORD of the Heavenly Armies, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you alone are the God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made heaven and earth.
17 Yahweh, extend your ear and hear! Yahweh, open your eyes and see, and hear all the words of Sennacherib that he has sent to taunt the living God!
17 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
17 (W)Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear; open Your eyes, O Lord, and see; and (X)listen to all the words of Sennacherib, who sent them to (Y)reproach the living God.
17 Listen closely, Lord, and hear;(Y) open Your eyes, Lord, and see.(Z) Hear all the words that Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God.(AA)
17 Extend your ear, LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, LORD, and look! Listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God.
18 Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the lands and their land,
18 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
18 Lord, it is true that the kings of Assyria have devastated all these countries and their lands.
18 It is true, LORD, that Assyrian kings have devastated all these countries,
19 to {set} their gods in the fire, for they [were] not gods, but [the] work of human hands, wood and stone, and they destroyed them.
19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
19 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but the (AA)work of men’s hands, wood and stone. So they have (AB)destroyed them.
19 They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods(AB) but made by human hands(AC)—wood and stone.(AD) So they have destroyed them.

20 So now, Yahweh, our God, save us from his hand so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you [are] Yahweh, you alone!"
20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
20 Now, O Lord our God, (AC)deliver us from his hand that (AD)all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, Lord, (i)are God.”
20 Now, Lord our God, save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You are the Lord(AE)—You alone.(AF)
20 So now, LORD our God, save us from his oppressive hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God."
God's Answer
21 And Isaiah son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: 'Because you have prayed to me {concerning} Sennacherib, king of Assyria,
21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:
21 Then (AE)Isaiah the son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria,
21 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “The Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria,
21 Then Amoz's son Isaiah sent this message to Hezekiah: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says, to whom you prayed concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria.
22 this [is] the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: She shows contempt for you; she derides you, virgin daughter of Zion; she shakes [her] head behind you, daughter of Jerusalem.
22 This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
22 this is the word that the Lord has spoken against him:“She has despised you and mocked you,The (AF)virgin (AG)daughter of Zion;She has (AH)shaken her head behind you,The daughter of Jerusalem!
22 this is the word the Lord has spoken against him:Virgin Daughter Zion(AG)despises you and scorns you:Daughter Jerusalem shakes her head(AH)behind your back.(a)
22 This is the message that the LORD has spoken in opposition to him: ""The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises and mocks you; the Daughter of Jerusalem she tosses her head behind you as you flee.
23 Whom have you taunted and blasphemed, and against whom have you raised up [your] voice and lifted your eyes upward? To the holy one of Israel!
23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
23 “Whom have you (AI)reproached and blasphemed?And against whom have you raised your voiceAnd (j)haughtily (AJ)lifted up your eyes?Against the (AK)Holy One of Israel!
23 Who is it you have mocked(AI) and blasphemed?Who have you raised your voice againstand lifted your eyes in pride?(AJ)Against the Holy One of Israel!(AK)
23 Whom have you insulted and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
24 By the hand of your servants you have taunted the Lord, and you have said, "With my many chariots, I myself have gone up [the] height of [the] mountains, [to] the remote areas of Lebanon. And I cut off {its tall cedars}, the choicest of its junipers. And I came [to] the height of its limit, the forest of its orchard.
24 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.
24 “Through your servants you have reproached the Lord,And you have said, ‘With my many chariots I came up to the heights of the mountains,To the remotest parts of (AL)Lebanon;And I cut down its tall (AM)cedars and its choice cypresses.And I will go to its (k)highest peak, its thickest (AN)forest.
24 You have mocked the Lord through(b) your servants.You have said, “With my many chariots(AL)I have gone up to the heights of the mountains,to the far recesses of Lebanon.I cut down its tallest cedars,its choice cypress trees.I came to its distant heights,its densest forest.
24 By your messengers you have insulted the LORD, and you have said, "With my many chariots I have climbed the heights of mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines; I reached its remotest heights, the most verdant of its forests.
25 I myself dug and drank waters, and I caused all the streams of Egypt to dry up by the sole of my feet."
25 I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

26 Have you not heard from {a long time ago}? I have made it from days of primeval time, and I formed it. Now I have brought it [about], and it is for fortified cities to collapse into heaps of destroyed stones.
26 Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.
26 “(AP)Have you not heard?Long ago I did it,From ancient times I (AQ)planned it.Now (AR)I have brought it to pass,That (AS)you should turn fortified cities into (AT)ruinous heaps.
26 Have you not heard?(AN)I designed it long ago;I planned it in days gone by.(AO)I have now brought it to pass,and you have crushed fortified cities(AP)into piles of rubble.
26 ""Didn't you hear how in the distant past I decided to do it, how I planned from days of old? Now I've made it happen that fortified cities become devastated, besieged heaps.
27 And their inhabitants [are] {weak}; they are dismayed, and they are ashamed; they have become [like] plants of [the] field, and [like] greens of grass, [like] grass on [the] roofs and a cultivated field {before} the standing grain.
27 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
27 “Therefore their inhabitants were short of strength,They were dismayed and put to shame;They were as the (AU)vegetation of the field and as the green herb,As (AV)grass on the housetops (m)is scorched before it is grown up.
27 Their inhabitants have become powerless,dismayed, and ashamed.They are plants of the field,tender grass,grass on the rooftops,blasted by the east wind.(d)
27 Their inhabitants are devoid of power, and are terrified and put to shame. They've become like plants in the field, like green shoots, like grass on rooftops, scorched by the east wind.
28 And I know your sitting down and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging {against} me.
28 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
28 “But I (AW)know your sitting downAnd your going out and your coming inAnd your raging against Me.
28 But I know(e) your sitting down,your going out and your coming in,(AQ)and your raging against Me.
28 ""I know when you rise up and when you sit down, your comings and goings and how you've become enraged at me.
29 Because you were enraged {against} me, and your noise has come up to my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle on your lips, and I will turn you back on the way [by] which you came.
29 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
29 “Because of your raging against MeAnd because your (n)(AX)arrogance has come up to My ears,Therefore I will put My (AY)hook in your noseAnd My (AZ)bridle in your lips,And I will turn you back (BA)by the way which you came.
29 Because your raging against Meand your arrogance have reached My ears,(AR)I will put My hook in your nose(AS)and My bit in your mouth;(AT)I will make you go backthe way you came.
29 Your insolence has reached my ears, so I'll put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I'll make you turn back on the road by which you came.
30 And this [shall be] the sign for you: the eating of volunteer plants this year, and in the second year self-seeded plants, and in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
30 And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
30 “Then this shall be the sign for you: (o)you will eat this year what (BB)grows of itself, in the second year what springs from the same, and in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30 “‘This will be the sign for you:(AU) This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what grows from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30 "And this will be your sign, Hezekiah: Eat this year what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow, reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
31 And the remnant of the house of Judah that remain shall {grow} roots downwards and make fruit upwards.
31 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:
31 The (BC)surviving (BD)remnant of the house of Judah will again (BE)take root downward and bear fruit upward.
31 The surviving remnant of the house of Judah will again take root(AV) downward and bear fruit upward.
31 Then the ones belonging to the house of Judah who have escaped will gather, and those who are found will take root downward and bear fruit upward.
32 For a remnant shall go out from Jerusalem and survivors from mountain Zion. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will do this.'
32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.
32 For out of Jerusalem will go forth a (BF)remnant and out of Mount Zion (p)survivors. The (BG)zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”’
32 For a remnant(AW) will go out from Jerusalem and survivors, from Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will accomplish this.’(AX)
32 For a remnant will come out of Zion, and a band of survivors from Jerusalem. The zeal of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies will accomplish this.
33 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not come to this city, and he shall not shoot an arrow there, and he shall not meet it [with] a shield, and he shall not heap a siege ramp up against her.
33 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
33 “Therefore, thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city or shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield, or throw up a (BH)siege ramp against it.
33 “Therefore, this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria:He will not enter this cityor shoot an arrow thereor come before it with a shieldor build up an assault ramp against it.
33 "Therefore this what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He won't enter this city, build up a siege ramp against it, shoot an arrow here, or threaten it with a shield.
34 He shall return by the way that he came, and he shall not come to this city,' {declares} Yahweh.
34 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.
34 (BI)By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he will not come to this city,’ declares the Lord.
34 He will go backthe way he came,and he will not enter this city.This is the Lord’s declaration.
34 By the same way that he came, he will return; he won't enter this city,' declares the LORD,
35 'And I will defend this city, to save it for my sake and for the sake of David, my servant.'"
35 For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
35 ‘For I will (BJ)defend this city to save it (BK)for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’”
35 "because I will defend this city and deliver it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David!'"
Sennacherib's Defeat
36 And the angel of Yahweh set out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When they rose in the morning, look! All of them [were] dead corpses.
36 Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 Then the (BL)angel of the Lord went out and struck 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when (q)men arose early in the morning, behold, all of these were (r)dead.
36 Then(BA) the angel of the Lord(BB) went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!
36 After this, the angel of the LORD went out and put to death 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp. When Hezekiah's army awakened in the morning there were all the dead bodies!
38 And this happened: he [was] bowing in worship [in] the house of Nisroch his god, and Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him with the sword. And they themselves escaped [to] the land of Ararat, and Esar-haddon his son reigned as king in his place.
38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
38 It came about as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons killed him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of (BN)Ararat. And (BO)Esarhaddon his son became king in his place.
38 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him down with the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat.(BD) Then his son Esar-haddon(BE) became king in his place.
38 Later, while he was worshiping in the house of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with swords and escaped to the land of Ararat. Then Sennacherib's son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
