1 And it happened on a Sabbath day, when Jesus went to the house of one of the leading Pharisees for a meal, that they [i.e., probably other Pharisees who were also guests] were watching Him closely.
1 It happened that when He went into the house of one of the (a)leaders of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, (A)they were watching Him closely.
1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

1 One Sabbath, Jesus went to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal. The guests were watching Jesus closely.
3 So, Jesus asked the teachers of the law of Moses and the Pharisees, saying, "Is it permissible by the law of Moses to heal people on the Sabbath day, or not?"
3 And Jesus answered and spoke to the (c)(B)lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “(C)Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?”
3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?
3 In response, Jesus asked the law experts(C) and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”(D)
3 So Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the Law, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"
4 But they did not say anything. So, Jesus took hold of the [sick] man, and [after] healing him, sent him away.

5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day?

5 Then he asked them, "If your son or ox falls into a well on the Sabbath day, you would pull him out immediately, wouldn't you?"
7 Then Jesus told a parable to those who had been invited [i.e., the dinner guests at the Pharisee's house. See verse 1], because He noticed how they were choosing places of honor [at the dinner table]. [So], He said to them,
7 And He began speaking a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how (F)they had been picking out the places of honor at the table, saying to them,
7 And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them,
7 He told a parable(F) to those who were invited, when He noticed how they would choose the best places(G) for themselves:
7 When Jesus noticed how the guests were choosing the places of honor, he told them a parable.
8 "When somebody invites you to a wedding reception, do not recline at the head of the table [Note: See Matt. 23:6], for maybe someone more honorable than you has been invited by the host.
8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, (G)do not (e)take the place of honor, for someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by him,
8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t recline at the best place, because a more distinguished person(H) than you may have been invited by your host.(c)
8 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don't sit down at the place of honor in case someone more important than you was invited by the host.
9 Then the one who invited both of you will come [over] and say to you, 'Give this man your seat [at the table],' and then you will be embarrassed and have to move to the least important seat.
9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then (H)in disgrace you (f)proceed to occupy the last place.
9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
9 The one who invited both of you may come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then in humiliation, you will proceed to take the lowest place.
9 Then the host who invited both of you would come to you and say, "Give this person your place.' In disgrace, you would have to take the place of least honor.
10 But when you are invited [i.e., to a wedding reception], go and recline at the least important seat, so that when the host comes [over to you], he will say, 'Friend, move up to a better seat.' Then you will be shown honor in front of everyone at the dinner table.
10 But when you are invited, go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, (I)move up higher’; then you will have honor in the sight of all who (g)are at the table with you.
10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
10 “But when you are invited, go and recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored(I) in the presence of all the other guests.(J)
10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, "Friend, move up higher,' and you will be honored in the presence of everyone who eats with you.
11 For every person who exalts himself [as important] will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted [as important]."
11 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”(K)
11 Because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be exalted."
12 Then Jesus also said to the Pharisee who had invited Him [to dinner], "When you prepare a breakfast or a supper, do not invite your friends, or brothers, or relatives or rich neighbors [only], for maybe they will invite you back, and [then] you will be repaid [for your kindness].
12 And He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment.
12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
12 He also said to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.
12 Then he told the man who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid.
13 But when you prepare a banquet, invite people who are poor, handicapped, crippled and blind [as well].
13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
13 On the contrary, when you host a banquet,(L) invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind.(M)
13 Instead, when you give a banquet, make it your habit to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
14 Then you will receive a blessing, because these people do not have anything to pay you back with, for you will be paid back when righteous people are raised from the dead."
14 and you will be blessed, since they (i)do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at (K)the resurrection of the righteous.”
14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid(N) at the resurrection of the righteous.”(O)
14 Then you will be blessed because they can't repay you. And you will be repaid when the righteous are resurrected."
15 And when one of the people who were reclining at the [supper] table with Jesus heard this, he said to Him, "The person who will eat bread in the [coming] kingdom of God is [certainly] blessed."
15 When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “(L)Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
15 And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
15 When(P) one of those who reclined at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, “The one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God(Q) is blessed!”
15 Now one of those eating with him heard this and told him, "How blessed is the person who will eat in the kingdom of God!"
16 But Jesus replied to him, "A certain man prepared a lavish supper and invited many [guests].
16 Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:
16 Then He told him: “A man was giving a large banquet and invited many.
16 Jesus told him, "A man gave a large banquet and invited many people.
17 When the supper was about ready, he sent his slave out to tell those who were invited, 'Come, for everything is [now] ready.'
17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come; for everything is ready now.’
17 And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
17 At the time of the banquet, he sent his slave to tell those who were invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’
17 When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, "Come! Everything is now ready.'
18 Then all of them, in the same way, began to excuse themselves [from attending]. The first one said to the host, 'I just bought some land and I need to go out and look it over, so please excuse me [from attending the supper].'
18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a (j)piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; (k)please consider me excused.’
18 And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
18 “But without exception(d) they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’
18 Every single one of them began asking to be excused. The first told him, "I bought a field, and I need to go out and inspect it. Please excuse me.'
19 And another person said, 'I just bought five teams of oxen and I need to go and test them out, so please excuse me [from attending the supper].'
19 Another one said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; (l)please consider me excused.’
19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
19 “Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m going to try them out. I ask you to excuse me.’
19 Another said, "I bought five pairs of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'
21 Then the slave returned and told his master about these things. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring people who are poor, and handicapped, and blind and crippled in here [i.e., to the supper].'
21 And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, ‘Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’
21 So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.
21 “So the slave came back and reported these things to his master. Then in anger, the master of the house told his slave, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor, maimed, blind, and lame!’(S)
21 "So the servant went back and reported all this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and told his servant, "Go quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'
22 And the slave said, 'Master, I did what you ordered me to do, and still there is room [at the dinner table].'
22 And the slave said, ‘Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
22 “‘Master,’ the slave said, ‘what you ordered has been done, and there’s still room.’
22 The servant said, "Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.'
23 Then the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the roads and along the brushy trails and urge people to attend [the supper] so that my house will be full [of guests].'
23 And the master said to the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.
23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
23 “Then the master told the slave, ‘Go out into the highways and lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.
23 Then the master told the servant, "Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full.
24 For I tell you, not one of those who were invited will [even] taste my supper."
24 For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.’”
24 For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
24 For I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will enjoy my banquet!’”
24 Because I tell all of you, none of those men who were invited will taste anything at my banquet.'"
26 "If anyone comes to me [i.e., to be my disciple], and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers and sisters and, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
26 “(O)If anyone comes to Me, and does not (n)hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
26 “If anyone comes to Me(U) and does not hate(V) his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, and even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.
26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple.
28 For which one of you who wants to build a [lookout] tower will not first sit down and calculate its cost, to see whether he has enough [money and materiel] to complete it?
28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
28 “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn’t first sit down and calculate the cost(X) to see if he has enough to complete it?
28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. He will first sit down and estimate the cost to see whether he has enough money to finish it, won't he?
29 For if he does not, maybe after he has laid the foundation and [then] is not able to complete [the tower], everyone who sees it will ridicule him,
29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
29 Otherwise, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers will begin to make fun of him,
29 Otherwise, if he lays a foundation and can't finish the building, everyone who watches will begin to ridicule him
30 saying, 'This man began to build [a tower] but was not able to finish it.'
30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
30 saying, ‘This man started to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
30 and say, "This person started a building but couldn't finish it.'
31 Or what king, planning to engage another king in war, will not first sit down and evaluate whether he will be able, with ten thousand [soldiers], to defeat someone who attacks him with twenty thousand [soldiers]?
31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and (Q)consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
31 “Or what king, going to war against another king, will not first sit down and decide if he is able with 10,000 to oppose the one who comes against him with 20,000?
31 "Or suppose a king is going to war against another king. He will first sit down and consider whether with 10,000 men he can fight the one coming against him with 20,000 men, won't he?
32 Or maybe, while the enemy is still a long way off, he will send representatives to ask for peace terms.
32 Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends (o)a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
32 If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
32 If he can't, he will send a delegation to ask for terms of peace while the other king is still far away.
33 So therefore, every one of you who does not say 'goodbye' to everything he owns, cannot be my disciple.
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
33 In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not say good-bye to(f) all his possessions(Y) cannot be My disciple.
33 In the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions."
34 Therefore salt is good, but if it loses its flavoring [ability], how will it ever get it back again?
34 “Therefore, salt is good; but (S)if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned?
34 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?
34 "Now, salt is good. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can its flavor be restored?
35 It is not suitable for the soil [i.e., for growing crops] or for fertilizer, but [only] for people to throw out. [See note on Matt. 5:13]. The person who has ears to hear with ought to listen [to this] carefully."
35 It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. (T)He who has ears to hear, (p)let him hear.”
35 It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
35 It isn’t fit for the soil or for the manure pile; they throw it out. Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”(AB)
