A Paralytic Healed

1 After Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, it became known that He was [back] at home [i.e., possibly at the house of Peter and Andrew, where He was staying. See 1:29].

1 When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home.

1 And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.

1 When(A) He entered Capernaum(B) again after some days, it was reported that He was at home.

1 Several days later, Jesus returned to Capernaum and it was reported that he was at home.

2 And there were so many people gathered to listen to His message that there was no room for any more [in the courtyard] around the doorway.

2 And (A)many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.

2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.

2 So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and He was speaking the message(C) to them.

2 Such a large crowd gathered that there wasn't room for them, even in front of the door. Jesus was speaking his message to them

3 Then some people came, bringing a man afflicted with paralysis, who was being carried by four friends.

3 (B)And they *came, bringing to Him a (C)paralytic, carried by four men.

3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.

3 Then they came to Him bringing a paralytic,(D) carried by four men.

3 when some people came and brought him a paralyzed man being carried by four men.

4 And when they were unable to get near Jesus, because of the [large] crowd, they removed [a section of] the roof [directly above Him]. [Note: The roof was a flat area, where people retired for rest, prayer, etc., and easily accessible from an outside stairway]. And when they had broken open [a sizable hole], they lowered the cot on which the paralyzed man was lying.

4 Being unable to (a)get to Him because of the crowd, they (D)removed the roof (b)above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the (E)paralytic was lying.

4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.

4 Since they were not able to bring him to(a) Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above where He was. And when they had broken through, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

4 Since they couldn't bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof over the place where he was. They dug through it and let down the mat on which the paralyzed man was lying.

5 When Jesus saw [the evidence of] their faith, He said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

5 And Jesus seeing their faith *said to the paralytic, (c)Son, (F)your sins are forgiven.”

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

5 Seeing their faith,(E) Jesus told the paralytic, “Son, your sins(F) are forgiven.”(G)

5 When Jesus saw their faith, he told the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

6 But certain experts in the law of Moses, who were sitting there, began reasoning in their minds,

6 But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,

6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,

6 But some of the scribes(H) were sitting there, thinking(I) to themselves:(b)

6 Now some scribes were sitting there, arguing among themselves,

7 "Why does this man talk this way? He is speaking against God. Who can forgive sins except one, that is, God?"

7 “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; (G)who can forgive sins (d)but God alone?”

7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

7 “Why does He speak like this? He’s blaspheming!(J) Who can forgive(K) sins(L) but God alone?”(M)

7 "Why does this man talk this way? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

8 And immediately Jesus perceived in His spirit what they were reasoning in their minds and said to them, "Why are you reasoning like this in your minds?

8 Immediately Jesus, aware (e)in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, *said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?

8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?

8 Right away(N) Jesus understood in His spirit(O) that they were thinking like this within themselves and said to them, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?(c)

8 At once, Jesus knew in his spirit what they were saying to themselves. "Why are you arguing about such things among yourselves?" he asked them.

9 Which is easier, to say to the paralyzed man, 'your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'get up, pick up your cot and walk'?

9 Which is easier, to say to the (H)paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’?

9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

9 Which is easier:(P) to say to the paralytic,(Q) ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’?(R)

9 "Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven,' or "Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'?

10 But, so you will know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins (He then said to the paralyzed man),

10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He *said to the paralytic,

10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

10 But so you may know that the Son of Man(S) has authority(T) on earth to forgive sins,”(U) He told the paralytic,

10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"" Then he told the paralyzed man,

11 I say to you, get up, pick up your cot and go home.'"

11 “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.”

11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.

11 “I tell you: get up,(V) pick up your mat, and go home.”

11 "I say to you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home!"

12 So, he got up and immediately picked up his cot and walked out in front of them all, so that everyone was amazed and gave honor to God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this before."

12 And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and (I)were glorifying God, saying, “(J)We have never seen anything like this.”

12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

12 Immediately he got up, picked up the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded(W) and gave glory(X) to God,(Y) saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”(Z)

12 So the man got up, immediately picked up his mat, and went out in front of all of them. As a result, all of the people were amazed and began to glorify God as they kept on saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"

Levi Called To Follow Jesus

13 Then Jesus went out again, walking along the shore of the lake, and [when] all the crowd came out to Him, He taught them.

13 And He went out again by the seashore; and (K)all the (f)people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.

13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.

13 Then(AA) Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd was coming to Him, and He taught(AB) them.

13 Jesus went out again beside the sea. The whole crowd kept coming to him, and he kept teaching them.

14 And as He walked along He saw Levi [i.e., the same person as Matthew. See Matt. 9:9], the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the toll booth [i.e., collecting taxes]. He said to him, "Become my follower." And he got up and followed Him.

14 (L)As He passed by, He saw (g)(M)Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and He *said to him, (N)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

14 Then, moving on, He saw Levi(AC) the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office,(AD) and He said to him, “Follow Me!”(AE) So he got up and followed(AF) Him.

14 As he was walking along, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax collector's desk. Jesus told him, "Follow me!" So Levi got up and followed him.

Dining With Sinners

15 And it happened that Jesus was having a meal at Levi's house and many tax collectors and worldly people sat down with Him and His disciples, for many [of these kinds of people] became His followers.

15 And it *(h)happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and (i)sinners (j)were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.

15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.

15 While He was reclining at the table in Levi’s house, many tax collectors(AG) and sinners(AH) were also guests(d)(AI) with Jesus and His disciples, because there were many who were following Him.

15 Later, he was having dinner at Levi's house. Many tax collectors and sinners were also eating with Jesus and his disciples, because there were many who were following him.

16 And when the experts in the law of Moses, being Pharisees [i.e., a strict sect of the Jewish religion], saw that He was eating with tax collectors and worldly people, they said to His disciples, "Why does Jesus eat and drink with tax collectors and worldly people?"

16 When (O)the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “(P)Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and (k)sinners?”

16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?

16 When the scribes(AJ) of the Pharisees(e)(AK) saw that He was eating(AL) with sinners(AM) and tax collectors,(AN) they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat(f) with tax collectors and sinners?”

16 When the scribes and the Pharisees saw him eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, "Why does he eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"

17 When Jesus heard [about] this, He said to them, "People who are healthy do not need a doctor, but [only] sick people do. I did not come to call those who do right, but sinners [instead]."

17 And hearing this, Jesus *said to them, (Q)It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

17 When Jesus heard this, He told them, “Those who are well don’t need(AO) a doctor,(AP) but the sick(AQ) do need one. I didn’t come to call the righteous,(AR) but sinners.”(AS)

17 When Jesus heard that, he told them, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick ones do. I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners."

On Fasting

18 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, [i.e., going without food and/or drink for religious reasons]. Some people came and asked Jesus, "Why do John's disciples and the Pharisees' disciples fast, but your disciples do not?"

18 (R)John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they *came and *said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

18 Now(AT) John’s(AU) disciples(AV) and the Pharisees(g)(AW) were fasting.(AX) People came and asked Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

18 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees would fast regularly. Some people came and asked Jesus, "Why do John's disciples and the Pharisees' disciples fast, but your disciples don't fast?"

19 Jesus answered them, "Can the companions of the groom fast while the groom is still with them? As long as they have the groom with them they cannot fast.

19 And Jesus said to them, “While the bridegroom is with them, (l)the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

19 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

19 Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests(h) cannot fast while the groom(AY) is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.

19 Jesus replied, "The wedding guests can't fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they can't fast.

20 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast at that time.

20 But the (S)days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.

20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

20 But the time(i) will come(AZ) when the groom is taken away from them,(BA) and then they will fast(BB) in that day.

20 But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day."

21 "No one sows a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, because what was supposed to cover the hole [actually] makes it larger. The new [piece of cloth] tears away from the old one and the hole is made worse.

21 “No one sews (m)a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise (n)the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results.

21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

21 No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new patch pulls away from the old cloth,(BC) and a worse tear is made.

21 "No one patches an old garment with a piece of unshrunk cloth. If he does, the patch pulls away from it the new from the old and a worse tear is made.

22 And no one puts freshly squeezed grape juice into bottles made of previously used animal skins. If he does, the grape juice will [cause cracks and] burst the [dried-out] animal skins and the grape juice will [all leak out and] be wasted, and the animal skin bottles will become useless. But people put freshly squeezed grape juice into newly prepared animal skin bottles."

22 No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

22 And no one puts new wine(BD) into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst(BE) the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins.(j) But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will make the skins burst, and both the wine and the skins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins."

Plucking Grain On The Sabbath

23 And it happened that Jesus was walking through the grainfields on the Sabbath day and His disciples began picking off heads of grain [to eat] as they traveled along. [Note: It was an accepted custom for people in that day to be permitted to do this as they walked along the paths bordering a grainfield].

23 (T)And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while (U)picking the heads of grain.

23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

23 On(BF) the Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and His disciples(BG) began to make their way picking some heads of grain.

23 Jesus happened to be going through the grain fields on a Sabbath. As they made their way, his disciples began picking the heads of grain.

24 And the Pharisees asked Him, "Look, why are they [i.e., Jesus' disciples] doing what is against the law of Moses on the Sabbath day?"

24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, (V)why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

24 The Pharisees(BH) said to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful(BI) on the Sabbath?”

24 The Pharisees asked him, "Look! Why are they doing what is not lawful on Sabbath days?"

25 And He replied to them, "Did you never read what King David did when he and his men were hungry and needed something to eat? [See I Sam. 21:6].

25 And He *said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry;

25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?

25 He said to them, “Have you never read what David(BJ) and those who were with him did when he was in need(BK) and hungry(BL)

25 He asked them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

26 Or how he entered the house of God [i.e., the Temple] when Abiathar was head priest, and ate the 'Bread of Presence' which was not permissible, according to the law of Moses, for anyone but priests? He even gave [some of it] to those who were with him."

26 how he entered the house of God in the time of (W)Abiathar the high priest, and ate the (o)consecrated bread, which (X)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?”

26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar(BM) the high priest(BN) and ate the sacred bread(BO)—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests(BP)—and also gave some to his companions?”

26 How was it that he went into the House of God during the lifetime of Abiathar the high priest and ate the Bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for anyone but the priests to eat, and gave some of it to his companions?"

27 And Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath day was made for man's [benefit], and not man for the Sabbath [day's benefit].

27 Jesus said to them, (Y)The Sabbath (p)was made (q)for man, and (Z)not man (r)for the Sabbath.

27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

27 Then He told them, “The Sabbath was made for(k) man and not man for(l) the Sabbath.(BQ)

27 Then he told them, "The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath.

28 So, the Son of man is lord [i.e., has authority] even over the Sabbath day."

28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

28 Therefore, the Son of Man(BR) is Lord(BS) even of the Sabbath.”(BT)

28 Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
