then will I make to differ on that day, the land of Goshen wherein my people do dwell, so that there shall not be there a gad-fly! in order that thou mayest know, that I, Yahweh, am in the midst of the land;

And Yahweh did so, and brought a grievous gad-fly unto the house of Pharaoh and the houses of his servants and in all the land of Egypt, and the land was laid waste by reason of the gad-fly.

And Moses said: Lo! I, am going out from thee and will make entreaty unto Yahweh, so will he take away the gad-fly - from Pharaoh from his servants, and from his people tomorrow, - only let not Pharaoh again deceive, in not letting the people go, to sacrifice to Yahweh.

And Yahweh did according to the word of Moses, and took away the gad-fly, from Pharaoh from his servants and from his people, - there remained not, one.

Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

Then the tribe of Gad: and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.

And over the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel.

The children of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites:

These are the families of the children of Gad according to those that were numbered of them, forty thousand and five hundred.

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;

The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,

And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.

And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:

And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.

And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.

And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

And they journeyed from Iyim, and encamped in Dibon-gad.

And they journeyed from Dibon-gad, and encamped in Almon-diblathaim.

For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:

"Of the land that we captured at that time, I've given its towns to the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad from Aroer near the Wadi Arnon to half of the hill country of Gilead.

And I've given Gilead to the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad as far as the Arnon Valley, designating the middle of the valley as its boundary, including up to the Jabbok River as a boundary with the Ammonites.

“Then I commanded you [Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh] at that time, saying, ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess; all you who are brave men shall cross over [the Jordan] armed before your brothers, the sons of Israel.

Bezer in the desert plain for the descendants of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead for the descendants of Gad, and Golan in Bashan for the descendants of Manasseh.

And these shall stand upon mount Ebal to curse; Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.

We captured their land and handed it as an inheritance to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.

Joshua told the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:

from mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and put them to death.

Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the Israelis defeated them. Then Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave it to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh as their inheritance.

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the children of Israel smote beyond the Jordan westward, from Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon even unto mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; and Joshua gave it unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;

and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entrance of Hamath;

The descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad, along with the other half-tribe of Manasseh, received their inherited portion that Moses the servant of the LORD had given them to the east beyond the Jordan River.

And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.

And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

And to the sons of Kohath, those remaining from the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and from the tribe of Gad, and from half the tribe of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities.

The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

Later, Joshua called together the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

And when they came unto the borders of Jordan, that are in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by Jordan, a great altar to see to.

And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel.

And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying,

Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,

For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD.

And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.

And the thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and did not intend to go up against them in battle, to destroy the land wherein the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt.

And the children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.

Meanwhile, Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had been severely oppressing the descendants of Gad and descendants of Reuben, gouging out their right eyes and not allowing Israel to have a deliverer. No one was left among the Israelis across the Jordan whose right eye Nahash, king of the Ammonites, had not gouged out. However, 7,000 men had escaped from the Ammonites and entered Jabesh-gilead.

And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

from the Jordan River eastward, all the territory of Gilead, the descendants of Gad, the descendants of Reuben, and the descendants of Manasseh, from Aroer by the Valley of the Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan.

And the children of Gad dwelt over against them, in the land of Bashan unto Salchah:

The sons of Reuben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 warriors who could serve in the army—men who carried shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for war.

So the God of Israel incited King Pul of Assyria (also known as King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria), who took them prisoner and brought the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh to Halah, Habor, Hara, and to the Gozan River, where they remain to this day.

Unto the sons of Merari were given by lot, throughout their families, out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities.

And out of the tribe of Gad; Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, and Mahanaim with her suburbs,

And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead; and the men of Gad killed them being born in the land, for they came down to take their cattle.

Mighty and experienced warriors from the descendants of Gad joined David at his wilderness stronghold. They were expert handlers of both shield and spear, with hardened looks and as agile as a gazelle on a mountain slope.

These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.

From the other side [east] of the Jordan River, of [the tribes of] Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 120,000 men, armed with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle.

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

King David appointed Jerijah, his relatives, and 2,700 competent men who were each family heads, to oversee the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh regarding everything pertaining to God as well as matters relating to the king.

Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with psalteries, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet: for so was the commandment of the LORD by his prophets.

He sent among them, The gad-fly, and it devoured them, And the frog, and it despoiled them;

He spake, and there came in the gad-fly, Gnats, in all their bounds;

And day, day, they will seek me, and delight to know my way as a nation who did justice and forsook not the judgment of his God: they will ask me the judgments of justice, they will delight to draw near to Gad.

But ye who forsake Jehovah, who forget my holy mountain, who prepare a table for Gad, and fill up mixed wine unto Meni:

Why dost thou gad about so much, and change thy way? Thou shalt also be brought to shame by Egypt, as thou wast brought to shame by Assyria.

Egypt is a very fair heifer; the gad-fly cometh, it cometh from the north.

Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

And the prophet Gad said unto David, "Abide not in castles, but depart and go to the land of Judah." Then David departed and came into the forest of Hereth.

And they went near him and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our sheep and for our cattle, and cities for our children: But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place. And our children shall dwell in the fenced cities, because of the inhabiters of the land. And we will not return unto our houses until the children of Israel have inherited: every man his inheritance. read more.
For we will not inherit with them on yonder side, Jordan forward, because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side, Jordan eastward." And Moses said unto them, "If ye will do this thing, that ye will go all harnessed before the LORD to war, and will go all of you in harness over Jordan before the LORD, until he have cast out his enemies before him, and until the land be subdued before the LORD, then ye shall return and be without sin against the LORD and against Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. But and if ye will not do so, behold, ye sin against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. Build your cities for your children and folds for your sheep, and see ye do that ye have spoken." And the Children of Gad and of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, "Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. Our children, our wives, substance, and all our cattle, shall remain here in the cities of Gilead. But we thy servants will go all harnessed for the war unto battle before the LORD, as my lord hath said." And Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the ancient heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, and said unto them, "If the children of Gad and Reuben will go with you over Jordan, all prepared to fight before the LORD: then when the land is subdued unto you, give them the land of Gilead to possess. But and if they will not go over with you in harness, then they shall have their possessions among you in the land of Canaan." And the children of Gad and Ruben answered, saying, "That which the LORD hath said unto thy servants we will do. We will go harnessed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall be on this side the Jordan."

And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh went before the children of Israel, armed, as Moses charged them. About forty thousand, trimmed for war, went before the LORD unto battle; even unto the wild fields of Jericho.

Then Joshua called unto the Reubenites, the Gadites and to the half tribe of Manasseh, and said unto them, "Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you: ye have not left your brethren of a long season unto this day but have kept the commandment of the LORD your God. read more.
And now the LORD hath given rest unto your brethren as he promised them. Wherefore, return and go unto your tents and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan. But in any wise take exceeding good heed that ye do the commandment and law which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you: which is, that ye love the LORD your God, and walk in his ways and keep his commandments, and cleave unto him, and serve him with all your hearts and all your souls." And so Joshua blessed them and sent them away. And they went unto their tents. Unto the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses gave possession in Bashan: and unto the other half thereof gave Joshua with their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And also when Joshua sent them away unto their tents and blessed them, he said unto them, "Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, gold, brass, iron, and with raiment above measure, and divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren."


The children of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.

And the Children of Gad dwelt over against them in the land of Bashan, even unto Salecah.

And the children of Gad in their kindreds were: Zephon, of whom cometh the kindred of the Zephonites; and of Haggi, cometh the kindred of the Haggites; and of Shuni, cometh the kindred of the Shunites; and of Ozni, cometh the kindred of the Oznites; and of Eri cometh the kindred of the Erites; and of Arod cometh the kindred of the Arodites: and of Areli cometh the kindred of the Arelites. read more.
These are the kindreds of the children of Gad, in number forty thousand and five hundred.


And when we had conquered this land the same time, I gave from Aroer, which is upon the river of Arnon, and half mount Gilead and the cities thereof unto the Reubenites, and Gadites.

The children of Reuben and the children of Gad had an exceeding great multitude of cattle. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was an apt place for cattle, they came and spake unto Moses and Eleazar the priest and unto the lords of the congregation, saying, "The land of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, read more.
which country the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle: and we thy servants have cattle. Wherefore," said they, "if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants to possess, and bring us not over Jordan."

And unto Reuben and Gad, I gave from Gilead unto the river of Arnon and half the valley and the coast, even unto the river Jabbok which is the border of the children of Ammon, and the fields and Jordan with the coast, from Chinnereth even unto the sea in the field which is the salt sea under the springs of Pisgah eastward.

and took their land and gave it a heritance unto the Reubenites and Gadites and to the half tribe of Manasseh.


And Gad came the same day to David and said unto him, "Go up and rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite." And David according to the saying of Gad went up as the LORD commanded.

And the Angel commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go and rear up an altar unto the LORD, in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. And David went at the saying of Gad which spake in the name of the LORD.


And when David was up in a morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying, "Go and say unto David, 'Thus sayeth the LORD: I offer thee three things, choose which of them I shall do to thee.'" And Gad came to David and showed him and said unto him, "Whether wilt thou have seven years hunger in thy land, or that thou flee three months before thine enemies and they following thee, or that there be three days pestilence in thy land? Now understand, and see what word I shall bring again to him that sent me." read more.
Then said David unto Gad, "I am in a marvelous strait. But let me fall I pray thee, into the hands of the LORD, for much is his mercy, and let me not fall into the hands of men.

And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer of visions, saying, "Go and tell David saying, 'Thus sayeth the LORD: I give thee the choice of three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do unto thee.'" And Gad came to David and said to him, "Thus sayeth the LORD: read more.
'Choose thee either three years' famishment, or three months to be consumed of thine adversaries, the sword of thine enemies overtaking thee: or else the sword of the LORD three days and pestilence in the land, the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel.' And now advise thyself what word I shall bring again unto him that sent me." And David said to Gad, "I am in an exceeding strait. But let me fall in to the hands of the LORD, for passing great is his mercy, and let me not fall unto the hands of men."

And in the valley they had Betharam, Bethnimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, and Jordan and the coasts that lie thereon, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth, on the other side Jordan eastward. This is the inheritance of the children of Gad in their kindreds, the cities with their villages.


And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David, when he kept a hold in the wilderness, men of might and men apt for war and could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were thereto as swift as the roes of the mountains: Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third, Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth, read more.
Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh, Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth, Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbannai the eleventh. These were of the sons of Gad, and were captains over the men of war, the small over a hundred, and the great over a thousand. These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when he had spilled over all his bank.

And of the other side Jordan, of the Reubenites, Gadites and of the half tribe of Manasseh with all manner of instruments of war, a hundred and twenty thousand. All these, being men of war able to order the array, came to Hebron with pure heart, to make David king upon all Israel. And thereto all the rest of Israel was of one accord to make David king.


The children of Reuben and the children of Gad had an exceeding great multitude of cattle. And when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was an apt place for cattle,

he said unto them, "Return with much riches unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, gold, brass, iron, and with raiment above measure, and divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren."


In Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;

Among the children of Gad, their generation in their kindreds and households of their fathers - when they were told by name, from twenty years and above, all that were mete for the war - were numbered in the tribe of Gad forty five thousand, six hundred and fifty.


"And on the south side, the standard of the host of Reuben shall lie with their companies; and the captain over the sons of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur:

And the tribe of Gad also; and the captain over the sons of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel:

So that all the number that pertain unto the host of Reuben, are a hundred thousand, fifty one thousand, four hundred and fifty, with their companies: and they shall be the second in the journey.


And when they came unto the coasts of Jordan that lie in the land of Canaan: there the children of Ruben, the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, built an altar fast by Jordan, and that a great altar to see to. And when the children of Israel heard say, "Behold the children of Reuben, the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan in the borders of Jordan on the side of the children of Israel": the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered them together to Shiloh, to go upon them with battle. read more.
And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Ruben, to the children of Gad and unto the half tribe of Manasseh into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and with him ten lords of every chief house a lord throughout all the tribes of Israel, which heads of their fathers' households were over the thousands of Israel.


Upon the borders of Zebulun from the east part unto the west, shall Gad have his portion.

This is the land with his portions, which ye shall distribute unto the tribes of Israel, sayeth the LORD God.


In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short, for Hazael slew them in all the coasts of Israel, from Jordan Eastward: even all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassites, from Aroer upon the river of Arnon, with Gilead and Bashan.

These were the children of Abihail the son of Huri the son of Jaroah Gilead the son of Michael the son of Jeshishai the son of Jahdo the son of Buz. Ahi was the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, the head of an ancient household among them. And they dwelt in Gilead and in Bashan and her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, even unto the end of their borders. And they were all reckoned by kindreds in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.


And the children of Gad in their kindreds were: Zephon, of whom cometh the kindred of the Zephonites; and of Haggi, cometh the kindred of the Haggites; and of Shuni, cometh the kindred of the Shunites; and of Ozni, cometh the kindred of the Oznites; and of Eri cometh the kindred of the Erites; and of Arod cometh the kindred of the Arodites: and of Areli cometh the kindred of the Arelites. read more.

As concerning the Ammonites, thus the LORD sayeth, "Hath Israel no children, or is he without a heir? Why hath your king then taken Gad in? Wherefore doth his people dwell in his cities?


And in the days of Saul they warred with the Hagrites which were overthrown by their hands. And they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of Gilead.


God stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, and carried away the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, Habor, Hara and to the River Gozan, where they remain unto this day.


And unto Gad he said, "Blessed is the room-maker Gad. He dwelleth as a lion that catcheth the arm with the of the head.
