Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?"
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples complained about this, he said to them, "Does this offend you?
And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by the Father."
Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?"
So his brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works you are doing.
Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.
And there was much complaining among the people about him. Some said, "He is a good man"; others said, "No, on the contrary, he deceives the people."
Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, "Is not this the man whom they seek to kill?
And many of the people believed in him, and they said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?"
Then Jesus said to them, "I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to him who sent me.
The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we shall not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?
What does he mean when he said, 'You will seek me and you will not find me,' and, 'Where I am you cannot come'?"
He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
When they heard these words, some of the people said, "Surely this is the prophet."
Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Will the Christ come from Galilee?
Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?"
The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?"
Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, said to them,
they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
They said this to test him, that they might have something of which to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
And when they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her."
Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more."
The Pharisees then said to him, "You are bearing witness of yourself; your testimony is not true."
Then they said to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also."
Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come."
Then the Jews said, "Will he kill himself, since he says, 'Where I go you cannot come'?"
He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
They said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.
So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority but speak just what the Father taught me.
Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples.
They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the things Abraham did,
You do the deeds of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I have not come of my own accord, but he sent me.
The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'
But you have not known him; I know him. If I said, I do not know him, I would be a liar like you; but I do know him and keep his word.
The Jews then said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."
As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the saliva, and anointed the man's eyes with the clay.
And he said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.
The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?"
Some said, "It is he." Others said, "No, but he is like him." He said, "I am the man."
He answered and said, "A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight."
They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know."
Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."
Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them.
So they again said to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that he was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory; we know that this man is a sinner."
Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
Then they reviled him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who speaks with you."
Then he said, "Lord, I believe!" And he worshiped him.
Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind."
Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to him, "Are we blind also?"
Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.
Then Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
Many of them said, "He has a demon, and is mad. Why listen to him?"
Others said, "These are not the sayings of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"
So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, you are gods'?
do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?
And many came to him and they said, "John performed no sign, but all that John said about this man was true."
When Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."
The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?"
These things he said, and after that he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to wake him up."
His disciples said, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will recover."
Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live;
She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."
And when she had said this, she went her way and called Mary her sister, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see."
But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"
Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been dead four days."
Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing by, that they may believe that you sent me."
When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with grave clothes, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.
