Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God has hedged in? For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings are poured out like the waters. A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

Where shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.

And why discourage you the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD has given them?

Because he remembered not to show mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

Therefore my judgment is, that we trouble not them, who from among the Gentiles are turned to God:

Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them who suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am mourning; dismay has taken hold on me.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
