He answered and said to them: Have you not read that the Creator, at the beginning, created them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh? And Jesus said to them: Can the sons of the bride-chamber mourn while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then will they fast.

And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees were in the habit of fasting; and they came, and said to him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples fast not? And Jesus said to them: Can the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can not fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast in those days.

And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink? And he said to them: Can you make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them; then shall they fast in those days.

for I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy: for I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you a chaste virgin to Christ.

And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven, from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
