For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man: for the man was not created for the woman, but the woman for the man. For this reason ought the woman to have a token of subjection on her head, on account of the angels. But neither is the woman without the man, nor the: man without the woman, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman; but all things are of God. Judge in yourselves, whether it is becoming that a woman pray to God unvailed. Does not nature itself teach you, that, if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a vail. But if any one seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor have the churches of God.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. But Mary said to the angel: How shall this be, since I know not a man? And the angel answered and said to her: The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for which reason, also, that which is begotten, being holy, shall be called the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth your kinswoman, even she has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren; for nothing shall be impossible with God. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. And the angel departed from her. And Mary arose in those days, and went with haste into the mountainous country, into a city of Judah; and she came into the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elizabeth. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, behold, when the voice of your salutation sounded in my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed; for there shall be a fulfillment of the things which were spoken to her from the Lord. And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior; for he has looked upon the lowly condition of his handmaid. For, behold, from this time, all generations shall call me blessed; for He that is Mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name: and his mercy is from generation to generation upon those who fear him. He has done mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in the understanding of their hearts. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, but the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped Israel his servant, (as he spoke to our fathers,) by remembering his mercy to Abraham and to his posterity forever. Do not rebuke an elderly man, but entreat him as a father; the younger men, as brothers: the elder women, as mothers; the younger women, as sisters, with all purity. Honor widows that are widows indeed.read more.
But if any widow has children or grand-children, let them learn first to be dutiful to their own family, and to requite their parents; for that is good and acceptable in the sight of God. But she that is a widow indeed, and left alone, trusts in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that lives voluptuously, is dead while she lives. These things also give in charge, that they may be blameless. And if any one provides not for his own, and especially for those of his own house hold, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. Let a widow be put on the list, if she is not under sixty years, having been the wife of one man, having a good reputation for good works; if she has borne children, if she has entertained strangers, if she has washed the saints feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

But the water that I will give him, shall be in him a fountain of water springing up in order to eternal life. The woman answered and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: You have well said. I have no husband; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband. In this you have spoken truly. The woman said to him: Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where we ought to worship. Jesus said to her: Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, will you worship the Father. You worship you know not what; we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. Martha said to him: I know that he will rise, in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection, and the life; he that believes on me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and he that lives and believes on me, shall never die. Do you believe this? She said to him: Yes, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying: The Teacher has come, and calls for you. When she heard it, she rose quickly and came to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. Then the Jews that were with her in the house, and were comforting her, seeing Mary rise and go out quickly, followed her, saying: She is going to the tomb to weep there. Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died. Then, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews that came with her weeping also, he was greatly moved in spirit, and troubled; and he said: Where have you laid him? They said to him: Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews: See how he loved him! And some of them said: Could not he, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have caused that even this man should not have died? Then Jesus, again greatly moved within himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was laid against it. Jesus said: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, said to him: Lord, the body is offensive; for he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her: Did I not tell you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted -up his eyes and said: Father, I thank thee, that thou hast heard me. I know, in deed, that thou dost always hear me. But for the sake of the multitude who stand around me, I have said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. And when he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound around with a handkerchief. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.

But every woman that prays or prophesies with her head uncovered, dishonors her head: for it is one and the same as if she was shaved. For if a woman has no vail on, let her also be shaved. But if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her have a vail. For a man ought not to vail his head, because he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man. read more.
