the scripture says, "for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be united to his wife, and they two shall be as one." these words contain a very mystical sense, I mean in reference to Christ and the church. wherefore let every one of you without exception, love his wife even as himself; and let the wife respect her husband.
You husbands, do you on your part behave with prudence towards your wives: who being of a more delicate make, ought to be treated with the greater tenderness: and consider they are equally intitled to the evangelical gifts, that your prayers may not be frustrated.

Now the manner of Christ's birth was this: his mother Mary being promised in marriage to Joseph, before they came together, she became pregnant by the holy Spirit. but Joseph her husband, being a good-natur'd man, and unwilling to expose her to publick shame, he designed to put her away privately. but while he was revolving this in his mind, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the off-spring of David, don't make any difficulty of taking Mary for thy wife: for her pregnancy is from the holy Spirit.read more.
and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. now by these events, that divine prediction of the Prophet had its full accomplishment, when he said, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour. Then Joseph being awak'd out of sleep, did as the angel of the Lord directed, and took his wife home, but did not cohabit with her as a wife, before she had-brought forth her first-born son; whom he named JESUS.
You husband, love your spouse, even as Christ loved the church, and laid down his life for her: to sanctify and purify her by the ablution of his word, that he himself might make her appear illustrious to his own eye, a church without spot, or any thing like a defect; so as to be holy and irreprehensible.

Jesus answer'd them, can the bride-men mourn, while the bridegroom is with them? the day indeed will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then will be the time to fast.
It was customary for the Pharisees, and the disciples of John, to fast; they came therefore and ask'd him, why do John's disciples, and the Pharisees fast so frequently, and not your disciples? Jesus answered, can the bridemen fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. but the time will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast.
and likewise those of the Pharisees, are frequently fasting and praying, while yours are employed in eating and drinking? to which he answered, would you have the bridemen fast, while the bridegroom is with them? however, the time will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they will have occasions enow of fasting.
for I am jealous over you with religious jealousy: since I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
and I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descend from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
