As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

And God gave Solomon great wisdom and understanding, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore. And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. And he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even to the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spoke also of beasts, and of fowls, and of creeping animals, and of fishes. The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom: and before honor is humility.

In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well-advised is wisdom.

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

How much better is it to get wisdom than gold? and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver?

The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the well-spring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.

There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoever walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

The labor of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

When the righteous prosper, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be extinguished.

The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a turbid fountain, and a corrupt spring.

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

Better is little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and trouble with it.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold. The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom. Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.

Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he is rich.

He that loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that restraineth his lips is wise.

He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbor: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness in it is a breach in the spirit.

He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit of it.

The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro by them that seek death.

By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

He that rebuketh a man afterward shall find more favor than he that flattereth with the tongue.

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:read more.
We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; who taketh away the life of its owners.

My son, forget not my law; but let thy heart keep my commandments; For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thy heart:read more.
So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thy heart; and lean not to thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths. Be not wise in thy own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honor the LORD with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thy increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

My son, attend to my wisdom, and bow thy ear to my understanding: That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honey-comb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:read more.
But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Lest thou shouldst ponder the path of life, her ways are movable, that thou canst not know them. Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Lest thou give thy honor to others, and thy years to the cruel: Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labors be in the house of a stranger; And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me! I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. Drink waters out of thy own cistern, and running waters out of thy own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thy own, and not for strangers with thee. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be held with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thy eye. Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thy heart.read more.
Say to wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman: That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

The horse-leech hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.read more.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchant's ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles to the merchant. Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
