For the Jews ask for a sign, and the Greeks seek for wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified; to the Jews, indeed, a stumbling-block, and to the Greeks, foolishness: but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God, and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise men according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble call you; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world, that he may bring to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world has God chosen, that he may put to shame the strong; and the ignoble things of the world, and the things that are despised, has God chosen, and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought things that are; that no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are you in Christ Jesus, who has become to us, from God, wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption; that, as it is written: He that glories, let him glory in the Lord.

For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the Gentiles, who have not a law, do, by nature, the things of the law, these who have not a law, are a law to themselves,

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars hill, and said: Men of Athens, I perceive that in all respects your reverence for demons excels that of other men. For as I was passing through, and looking attentively at the objects of your worship, I dis covered also an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore you ignorantly worship, him I make known to you.
