after this, Paul had a design to pass thro' Macedonia and Achaia in his way to Jerusalem: purposing when he had been there to make a visit to Rome.

now I would not have you ignorant, my brethren, that I often purposed to come to you, tho' I have been hindered hitherto, that I might be useful among you as well as among other Gentiles. I owe what service I can do to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians, to the learned, and to the illiterate. so, that as far as it depends upon me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also, who are at Rome.

but now there being no further occasion for me in these parts, and having had a great desire these many years to visit you; when I take my journey into Spain, I hope to see you in my way, and be forwarded by you to that place, after having for some time enjoy'd the pleasure of your company. but now I am going to Jerusalem, to distribute charity to the converts.read more.
for those of Macedonia and Achaia, have thought fit to make a contribution for the poor converts at Jerusalem. they have thought fit, I say, and they owed them as much. for if the Gentiles have participated of their spirituals, they are bound on their side to minister to them in their temporals. when I have dispatch'd this affair, and have secur'd to them this collection, I will come to you in my way to Spain. and I know that when I do come, I shall come charged with the blessings of Christ.

The night following, the Lord appear'd to him, and said, Paul, take courage; for the same remonstrances that you have made concerning me at Jerusalem, you must likewise make at Rome.

"I stand, said Paul, to the tribunal of Cesar, where I ought to be judged. to the Jews I have done no wrong, as you yourself very well know. if I am guilty of any capital crime, I am contented to die. but since their accusations are all groundless, that I may not be sacrificed to their humour, I appeal to Cesar." upon this, Festus having deliberated with his council, answer'd, "since you have appeal'd to Cesar, to Cesar you shall go."

When it was resolv'd, that we should sail for Italy, Paul and other prisoners were delivered to the custody of one Julius, a centurion of a cohort in Augustus's legion. we embark'd in a vessel of Adramyttium, designing to coast it along Asia, and set sail with Aristarchus a Macedonian of Thessalonica.

where finding some brethren, they desir'd us to stay with them seven days, after which we set out for Rome: the brethren there having had news of us, came as far as Appiiforum, and the Three inns to meet us: whom when Paul saw, he gave thanks to God, and was greatly encourag'd. Upon our arrival at Rome, the centurion deliver'd the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was allow'd to be at private lodgings, under the custody of a soldier.

After this, Paul staid two whole years in a house he had hired, and gave access to all that visited him, preaching the kingdom of God, and instructing them in all things relating to the Lord Jesus Christ, with the utmost freedom, without being molested.

Having therefore set him a day, they came in great numbers to his lodgings; where he explain'd and confirm'd the reality of the gospel-dispensation, from morning to night, enforcing what the writings of Moses and the prophets had affirm'd concerning Jesus. some believed what he had said, but others did not believe:

Now I would have you know, my brethren, that what has happen'd to me, has only conduc'd to the progress of the gospel; so that the whole court and publick are well appriz'd that I am a prisoner upon the account of Jesus Christ.

for I am not ashamed of the gospel, since it is divinely effectual to salvation, to everyone that believes, to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile. There it is that divine justification is revealed to be wholly by faith: as it is written, " the just shall live by faith."

for all having sinned, all have forfeited eternal glory:

as it is written, " there is none righteous, no not one:

for the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

that divine justification, which by faith in Jesus Christ is extended to all, that believe; for there is no distinction:

for I am not ashamed of the gospel, since it is divinely effectual to salvation, to everyone that believes, to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile.

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us access by faith to that degree of favour, we are in, by which we triumph in the hopes of divine glory.

now this saying, "that it was accounted to him," was not written for his sake alone, but for us also, to whom it shall be accounted, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

but herein hath God displayed his love towards us, in that Christ died for us, even while we were yet sinners. much more then being now justified by his blood, shall we thro' him be delivered from the wrath to come. for if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his son: much more being reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

for the scripture saith, "whosoever believeth on him, shall not be ashamed." In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him. "whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved."

Then there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying "come hither, I will explain to you the judgment of the great whore, that sitteth upon many waters: by whom the kings of the earth became idolaters, and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of idolatry." so he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, and ten horns.read more.
and the woman was arrayed in purple, and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abominable impurities of idolatry. Upon her forehead this mystical title was written, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots, and abominations of the earth. and I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondred with great admiration. and the angel said to me, wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. the beast that thou sawest, was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, but shall be. the meaning is very comprehensive. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. they likewise signify seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; when he comes, he will continue but a short space. the beast that was, and is not, is himself the eighth: he is of the seven, and shall be destroy'd. the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings for a while with the beast. they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast. they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them. Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces. the ten horns which you saw upon the beast, they shall hate the whore, they shall plunder, and strip her, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished. and the woman which you saw, is that great city, which reigns the empress of the kings of the earth.

And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication."

and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

After this I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightned with his glory. and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird. for all nations have drunk of the poisonous wine of her idolatry, the kings of the earth have submitted to her idolatries, and the merchants of the earth are grown rich through the abundance of her delicacies.read more.
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, come out of her, my people, that ye may not be partakers of her sins, nor share in her plagues: for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembred her iniquities. reward her according to her dealings, and repay her double, according to her works: give her twice as much in the same cup which she gave you to drink, give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow." therefore shall her plagues come, mortality, mourning, and famine all at once: and she shall be consumed with fire: for the Lord God, who condemns her, is almighty. the kings of the earth, the accomplices of her licentiousness and luxury, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her conflagration, frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?" the merchants of the earth shall bewail and mourn over her, because there are none to purchase their cargo: their gold, and silver, precious stones, and pearls, fine linnen, and purple, their silk, scarlet, and all sort of citron wood, their various vessels of ivory, and of precious wood, of brass, iron, and marble: nor their cinnamon, perfumes, essences, and frankincense; nor their wine, oil, fine flour, and wheat; their cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots; nor the servile souls of men. the fruits, the object of your delight, are departed from thee, all your delicacy and magnificence are lost, beyond the possibility of a recovery! the merchants of these wares who were enrich'd by her, shall stand afar off, under the dread of her torments, with tears and lamentations, crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls: her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off, and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city? they will scatter dust on their heads, and cry with tears, and bemoaning, "alas, alas, that great city, which enrich'd all the traders by sea, by the consumption she made: how is she reduc'd to a desert, in an instant!" O heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets, triumph at her ruin, since God hath avenged you on her. Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, "thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, never to be found any more. the musick of the harp, of the flute, and of the trumpet, shall never be heard again in thee: no artist of any kind shall be found again in thee; the sound of a milstone shall never be heard again in thee; the lamp shall no more be lighted in thee; the bridal-song shall be heard there no more: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; all nations were seduc'd by thy enchantments. here it was, that the blood of the prophets, of the saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth, was found."
