After these things, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, joined himself with Ahaziah, king of Israel, who was given over to wickedness; he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they made the ships in Eziongeber. Then Eliezer, the son of Dodavah of Mareshah, prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD shall destroy thy works. And the ships were broken, and they were not able to go to Tarshish.

Haran and Canneh and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad were in thy market. These, thy merchants, negotiated with thee in all sorts of things: in blue robes and broidered work and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. The ships of Tarshish, thy squadrons, went forth on thy behalf: and thou wast full, and wast multiplied greatly in the midst of the seas. The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots. And all that handle the oar, the rowers, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land and shall cause their voice to be heard upon thee and shall cry bitterly and shall cast up dust upon their heads; they shall wallow themselves in the ashes. And they shall pull out their hair for thee and gird themselves with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of soul and bitter wailings. And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee and lament over thee, saying, Who is like Tyre, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea? When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou didst fill many peoples; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy contracts. In the time when thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy commerce and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall. All the inhabitants of the isles shall be astonished at thee, and their kings shall be sore afraid; they shall be troubled in their countenance. The merchants among the peoples shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror and never shalt be any more.

Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD and went down to Joppa, and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish fleeing from the presence of the LORD. Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven; the cankerworm spoils and flies away.

And every shipmaster and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city was like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, in which all that had ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her riches! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, apostles, and prophets; for God has judged your cause upon her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with impetus shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all. And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatever craft he is, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth in whose witchcraft all the Gentiles have erred. And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth.

And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of demons, and the hold of every unclean spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all the Gentiles have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the power of her delicacies.

Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measurement of land, in weight, or in other measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin shall ye have. I AM your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Thou shalt not have in thy bag different weights, a great and a small. Thou shalt not have in thy house different measures, a great and a small. But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have, that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.read more.
For all that do such things and all that do unrighteously are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

A false balance is abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight.

A just weight and balance are the LORD's; all the weights of the bag are his work.

Double weights and double measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land, saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit;

Thou hast defiled thy sanctuary by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy trafficking; therefore I brought forth fire from the midst of thee, which has consumed thee, and I brought thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all those that behold thee.

He is a merchant who has the balances of deceit in his hand; he loves to oppress.

Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked and the scant measure that is abominable? Can I be pure with false balances and with a bag of deceitful weights?

He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build,

Because of the multitude of thy trafficking thou wast filled with violence, and thou hast sinned; and I cast thee out of the mountain of God, and I cast thee unto evil from among the stones of fire, O cherubim that wast covered.

Come now, ye that say, Today and tomorrow we will go into such a city and continue there a year and buy and sell and get gain; and ye do not know what shall be tomorrow. For what is your life? Certainly it is a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Ye ought to say instead, If the Lord wills, and if we live, we shall do this or that.read more.

by the greatness of thy wisdom in thy trafficking thou hast multiplied thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheaves and lading asses with wine, grapes, figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day; and I protested unto them the day in which they sold the food. And they have cast lots for my people and have given a boy for a harlot and sold a girl for wine that they might drink.

Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Buy the truth and sell it not, also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

For it is like a man travelling into a far country, who called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods. For ye are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
